Job Overview:
The position of Translator at UN Women Lebanon involves providing high-quality written translation services on a retainer basis. The role is crucial for supporting program implementation, advocacy, partnerships, and communications activities. The Translator will work under the supervision of the Communications and Advocacy Specialist and will be responsible for translating a wide range of materials, including reports, policy briefs, research documents, speeches, and social media content. The position requires a commitment to gender-sensitive and inclusive language, ensuring that all translated materials align with UN Women’s editorial and branding guidelines. The Translator will be expected to deliver accurate and contextually appropriate translations while adhering to strict deadlines and maintaining confidentiality.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Translator will be responsible for providing accurate, high-quality translations of various documents, including reports, policy briefs, research documents, speeches, statements, presentations, press releases, meeting notes, and correspondence. Specific duties include translating content from Arabic to English, English to Arabic, French to English, English to French, Arabic to French, and French to Arabic. The Translator must ensure the use of gender-sensitive, inclusive, and non-discriminatory language across all translated materials. They will maintain consistency in terminology and style, deliver complete and high-quality outputs that comply with UN Women language standards, and meet agreed timelines. The Translator will also incorporate feedback and revisions as requested, ensure confidentiality, and submit translated documents in the required format and timeframe for each assignment.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires the completion of secondary education as a minimum, with a Bachelor’s degree in translation, languages, or a related field being desirable. Candidates must have a proven expertise in professional translation with a strong command of Arabic, English, and French. They should demonstrate the ability to apply gender-sensitive, inclusive, and neutral language in their translations. Attention to detail and a commitment to quality assurance are essential, along with the ability to manage multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines. The role also requires the capacity to work independently while collaborating effectively with a diverse team.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed secondary education, with a Bachelor’s degree in translation, languages, or a related field being preferred. This educational background is essential for understanding the nuances of language and translation, particularly in the context of gender-sensitive communication.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in written translation involving Arabic, English, and French is required. Candidates should have demonstrated experience translating documents related to development, human rights, gender equality, or social issues. Familiarity with gender-sensitive and inclusive language in all three languages is also necessary. Previous experience working with the United Nations system or international organizations is considered desirable, as it indicates familiarity with the standards and expectations of such entities.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English, Arabic, and French is mandatory for this position. This linguistic proficiency is crucial for ensuring accurate and effective communication across diverse documents and audiences.

Additional Notes:
The Translator will be engaged under a one-year retainer contract, with payment based on the number of pages translated (1 page = 250 words). UN Women Lebanon will identify translation assignments in advance and confirm the Consultant’s availability. The role is expected to involve a flexible workload, with assignments requiring short turnaround times.
