Job Overview: The Security Officer, FS-6, plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel, project personnel, and eligible dependents in Juba, South Sudan. Reporting to the Chief Security Officer (CSO), the Security Officer is responsible for developing and implementing security strategies, conducting assessments of local security conditions, and advising personnel on security issues. The position requires a proactive approach to managing security risks, coordinating emergency response systems, and maintaining communication with various stakeholders. The Security Officer will also oversee security training programs and ensure compliance with security protocols, contributing to the overall safety of the mission's operations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Security Officer will be tasked with a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: contributing to office management procedures, strategizing security plans, conducting security assessments, serving on the Security Cell, evaluating emergency evacuation capabilities, monitoring security operations, maintaining communication with security focal points, briefing senior officials on security status, ensuring fire safety measures are in place, conducting physical security inspections, managing guard forces, investigating security incidents, and participating in protective service planning for senior UN officials. Additionally, the officer will draft technical specifications for security equipment procurement, supervise identity card issuance, manage a warden system, provide security training, and facilitate standardized security training programs.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with additional qualifications in security management being highly desirable. UNDSS certification in relevant security training courses is preferred. The role requires a solid understanding of security challenges in post-conflict environments, as well as the ability to manage security units effectively. Professionalism, planning and organizing skills, and strong communication abilities are essential for success in this position.
Educational Background: A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. Candidates with a first-level university degree will have an advantage, as they will only need five years of relevant experience instead of ten. Specialized training in security management or related fields is highly desirable, particularly certifications from recognized security training programs.
Experience: A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in security operations or a related field is required for candidates with a high school diploma. Those with a first-level university degree need at least five years of experience. Experience in international security operations, particularly in conflict or post-conflict environments, is essential. Proven experience in adult learning and the design and delivery of training programs is also desirable, as the role involves significant training responsibilities.
Languages: English is the mandatory working language for this position, with a required proficiency level of UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. While French is also a working language of the United Nations, it is not specifically required for this position. Candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills in English to effectively perform their duties.
