The incumbent will work closely with various stakeholders, including UN agencies, NGOs, and local authorities, to facilitate operations and maintain a secure environment. The role demands strong analytical skills to assess security situations and provide actionable advice to senior management. The Senior Field Security Assistant will also be responsible for developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to security, ensuring compliance with UN policies, and conducting security briefings for staff. The position is based in Lima, Peru, and requires the candidate to be present in the country at the time of application and throughout the contract period.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Senior Field Security Assistant include:
Assisting the supervisor in evaluating security risks and assessing existing security measures for UNHCR personnel and operations.
Ensuring compliance with security protocols and procedures in accordance with UNSMS policies and UNHCR guidelines.
Participating in security assessment missions and gathering information to analyze the security situation in the field.
Supporting the implementation of security-related projects and monitoring security events.
Liaising with UN security management system actors, local law enforcement, and civil authorities.
Responding to staff queries on security issues and providing immediate assistance as needed.
Advising management on security gaps and needs, and maintaining relationships with Host Government Security Forces.
Identifying and managing risks while seeking opportunities that impact objectives in the area of responsibility. 1
Performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Senior Field Security Assistant position include:
Familiarity with UN security and safety procedures, including emergency evacuations and contingency planning.
Proven ability to analyze security risks and provide actionable advice.
Experience in managing security equipment and preparing security SOPs.
Strong communication and training skills to interact effectively with staff and stakeholders.
High level of integrity and discretion, with the ability to work under pressure in dynamic environments.
Legal presence in the country at the time of application and throughout the contract period is mandatory.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a High School Diploma with at least 2 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least 1 year of relevant work experience. Candidates should have a background in security and safety issues, and relevant certifications are considered essential.
Experience: Candidates should possess a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in security roles, particularly in field security, police, military, or NGO corporate security. Experience in community engagement in conflict-prone areas and emergency response is highly desirable. Previous experience with UN agencies or similar organizations is an asset.
Languages: Fluency in Spanish is mandatory, along with a good command of spoken and written English. Knowledge of additional languages is considered a plus, particularly for roles that require interaction with diverse populations.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a Local Individual Contractor Agreement (LICA) and is expected to last until mid-year, with the possibility of extension based on operational needs, budget, and performance. The role is full-time and requires the candidate to be physically present in Lima, Peru. Recruitment as a UNHCR staff member is subject to proof of vaccination against Covid-1
