Job Overview:
The Geotechnical Engineer (Drill Specialist) will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of a project aimed at improving infrastructure and housing in the Izidora neighborhood of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. This position involves close collaboration with UN-Habitat’s operational and technical teams, ensuring that geotechnical engineering projects are executed effectively. The engineer will be responsible for analyzing and reviewing geotechnical engineering projects related to soil investigation and stabilization of slopes and streets. The role requires the preparation of technical reports and opinions, as well as providing guidance to designers and planners. The consultant will also participate in meetings and contribute to the overall success of the project by ensuring that all technical documents meet quality standards. The position is home-based and expected to last for three months, with specific deliverables tied to the project timeline.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Geotechnical Engineer (Drill Specialist) will have a variety of responsibilities, including:
  • Analyzing and reviewing geotechnical engineering projects, particularly those related to soil investigation and stabilization of slopes and streets.
  • Preparing detailed reports and technical opinions on the basic projects of geotechnical engineering.
  • Proposing changes to technical drawings to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Providing technical guidance to designers, planners, and engineers involved in the project.
  • Collaborating with team members to prepare necessary technical documents for the project.
  • Participating in meetings with the technical team to discuss project progress and challenges.
  • Performing additional technical support tasks as required by the project team.
  • Completing all required training and courses, including the BSAFE security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security course from UNDSS, within the first month of employment.
  • Ensuring compliance with United Nations security mechanisms and maintaining personal safety during project activities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a postgraduate degree in Civil Engineering or related fields, or have an additional four years of relevant experience beyond the basic requirements. A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field is also necessary. The position requires a minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in Geotechnical Engineering roles. Training in nature-based solutions and experience working in informal settlements are desirable. Previous experience within the UN System is also considered an asset. Candidates should demonstrate strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD, and possess competencies in project management, communication, teamwork, and knowledge management.

Educational Background:
The educational requirements for this position include a postgraduate degree (Lato or stricto sensu) in Civil Engineering or a related field. Alternatively, candidates may qualify with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, combined with additional relevant experience. The emphasis is on having a solid educational foundation in civil engineering principles, particularly those related to geotechnical engineering.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in Geotechnical Engineering. Candidates should have a proven track record of working on relevant projects, particularly those involving soil investigation and stabilization. Experience in design and work within informal settlements is desirable, as is familiarity with the UN System and its operational frameworks. The role demands a high level of expertise in geotechnical engineering practices and the ability to manage complex projects effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in Portuguese is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary working language in Brazil. Additionally, working knowledge of English or Spanish is desirable, given that English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, and Spanish is used in the Regional Office. Proficiency in these languages will facilitate communication and collaboration within the UN-Habitat framework and with local stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is on a local basis, and only nationals from Brazil or candidates with a permanent visa in Brazil may apply. The expected duration of the contract is three months, with the possibility of extension subject to funding availability and performance. The consultant will be compensated at a rate of BRL 19,910, with payments structured based on the delivery and approval of specific project outputs. The consultant must be available for travel within Brazil as required for project activities, with travel expenses covered by UN-Habitat according to UN travel guidelines.
