Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
Mercy Corps is a leading global organization founded on the belief that a better world is possible. Established to respond to crises and support communities in need, Mercy Corps operates in over 40 countries worldwide, focusing on disaster response, economic development, and community resilience. The organization is dedicated to empowering individuals and communities to overcome adversity and build sustainable futures. With a diverse team of employees, Mercy Corps emphasizes collaboration and innovation to address complex challenges faced by vulnerable populations.

Job Overview:
The consultancy position is aimed at conducting a comprehensive livelihoods, value chain, and partner landscape assessment in Chiapas, Mexico. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address rural poverty, violence, and economic development in border communities. The consultant will be responsible for validating priority geographies and agricultural value chains, identifying potential implementation partners, and analyzing key constraints affecting rural and Indigenous populations. The assessment will also explore the drivers of violence and insecurity among youth, focusing on economic opportunities and migration pressures. The findings will inform the design of a multi-year, cross-border livelihoods initiative that aims to support 12,000 participants in the targeted areas.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will undertake several key activities, including conducting a desk review of relevant secondary data, carrying out key informant interviews with local organizations, and assessing priority agricultural value chains such as coffee, cacao, and horticulture. The consultant will map existing and potential local partners, evaluate their capacities, and analyze challenges faced by rural populations related to conflict and economic exclusion. Additionally, the consultant will identify opportunities for regenerative agriculture and women's economic participation. Deliverables include a comprehensive assessment report, partner landscape mapping, and a final presentation summarizing key findings and recommendations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess 5-10 years of experience in a relevant technical field, with a strong preference for those who have experience in the target geographies of Mexico and/or Guatemala. The consultant should demonstrate expertise in livelihoods assessments, agricultural value chains, and partnership development. Strong analytical and communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in fields such as agriculture, economics, international development, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees may be preferred, particularly for candidates with extensive experience in the field.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, with a strong emphasis on previous work in similar contexts. Experience in conducting assessments and working with rural and Indigenous communities is highly desirable. Familiarity with the socio-economic dynamics of Chiapas and surrounding regions will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in Spanish is mandatory, given the location of the consultancy and the communities involved. Proficiency in English is also required for reporting and communication purposes. Knowledge of Indigenous languages spoken in the region would be considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is expected to last up to 20 days in January-February 2026, with specific dates to be confirmed. The consultant will report to the Deputy Regional Director, Programs LAC, and will collaborate closely with various team members. This position is part-time and may involve travel to both Mexican and Guatemalan municipalities. Compensation details and specific deliverable deadlines will be discussed upon confirmation of travel dates.
