Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) was established to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. It serves as the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat collaborates with various partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities. The organization aims to leverage urbanization as a transformative force to reduce inequality, discrimination, and poverty. The UN-Habitat National Office for Morocco was established in 2021 in Rabat, focusing on providing technical cooperation and capacity building to implement policies, programs, and operational projects aimed at achieving sustainable urban development in Morocco. The office works closely with the Moroccan government, particularly the Ministry of National Planning, Urban Development, Housing, and Urban Policy, to support the government's sustainable urban development efforts. The establishment of the UN-Habitat representative office in Morocco is intended to enhance governance and implementation of the country program while consolidating cooperation mechanisms with the Moroccan government.

Job Overview:
The intern will report to the Programme Management Officer and will be responsible for supporting the development of technical and normative outputs of Urban Planning projects. This includes gathering data, analyzing information, and contributing to the preparation of reports and technical documents. The intern will assist in coordinating program/project planning and preparation work for medium-sized and complex departmental initiatives, monitoring the status of proposals and documentation for review and approval. The role also involves compiling, summarizing, and presenting basic information on specific programs and related topics. The intern will support capacity building on various planning themes and assist in the localization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within urban planning policy frameworks. This includes drafting and commenting on documents, producing information materials, and identifying fields for collaboration with key actors in UN-Habitat programs. The intern will also contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, provide substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, and assist in planning and implementing events such as meetings and workshops. The role requires coordination of activities related to budget funding and preparation of related documents and reports, as well as contributing to the improvement of the work plan of the country office.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
  • Supporting the development of technical and normative outputs for Urban Planning projects by gathering data, analyzing it, and contributing to reports and technical documents.
  • Assisting in the coordination of program/project planning and preparation work for medium-sized and complex departmental initiatives, monitoring the status of proposals and documentation.
  • Compiling, summarizing, and presenting basic information on specific programs and related topics.
  • Supporting capacity building on various planning themes.
  • Assisting in the localization of SDGs in urban planning policy frameworks and guidelines.
  • Identifying fields for collaboration with key actors in UN-Habitat programs.
  • Drafting working documents, including concept notes and project presentations.
  • Contributing to the preparation of various written outputs, such as background papers, policy notes, and analytical notes.
  • Providing substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including reviewing and analyzing emerging issues and trends. 1
  • Assisting in planning and implementing events like meetings and workshops. 1
  • Coordinating activities related to budget funding and preparing related documents and reports. 1
  • Contributing to the improvement of the work plan of the country office. 1
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with a Bachelor's degree, Master's, PhD, or equivalent. Additionally, applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite) and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. They should also have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing a willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views.

Educational Background:
The preferred areas of study for applicants include international relations, international development, sustainable development, political sciences, eco-management, and related fields. Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or have graduated with a university degree as defined above. If selected, they must start the internship during the last year of studies or within one year of graduation in social science and/or development studies.

Experience:
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the type of internship being applied for is required. Applicants must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such a program.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in both oral and written English and French is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable, as is knowledge of another UN language.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
