Job Overview: The National Professional Officer position is located within the United Nations Resident Coordination Office (RCO) in Amman, Jordan. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the Resident Coordinator Office. The role involves contributing to the implementation of communications strategies aimed at raising awareness and engagement with target audiences. The officer will gather insights from various media sources, draft compelling narratives, and develop media lines for crisis situations. The position requires the creation of optimized content for different platforms, coordination of press events, and the development of strategic communications partnerships. The officer will also engage in outreach and advocacy strategies to promote UN priorities and maintain expertise in emerging communication technologies.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the National Professional Officer include:
Implementing communications strategies to raise awareness and drive engagement with target audiences.
Gathering insights from traditional, social, and digital media to inform communications strategies.
Drafting narratives and messaging that engage audiences across various channels.
Mapping media outlets and fostering relationships with media representatives.
Developing media lines for crisis situations and sensitive issues.
Planning and coordinating press conferences, briefings, and media events.
Creating compelling content optimized for target audiences across platforms.
Drafting and producing communications products such as press releases and reports.
Developing and implementing communications campaigns with measurable impact. 1
Coordinating strategic communications partnerships with stakeholders. 1
Delivering outreach and advocacy strategies to engage audiences. 1
Creating content for UN and community radio channels and podcasts. 1
Updating policy and guidance related to strategic communications. 1

Collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and provide insights for decision-making.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of sustainable development theories and concepts, along with the ability to conduct independent research and analysis. They should demonstrate professional competence and mastery of subject matter, with a commitment to gender perspectives in their work. The ideal candidate will have excellent planning and organizational skills, the ability to communicate effectively, and a collaborative approach to teamwork. They should be motivated by professional concerns and show persistence in overcoming challenges.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, digital communications, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is considered an advantage.
Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in developing and implementing communications strategies is required. Candidates should have demonstrated knowledge of strategic communications principles and practices, as well as the ability to draft clear messages for diverse audiences. Skills in developing creative content and knowledge of current digital media platforms are desirable. Experience in conducting systematic data collection and analysis is also beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this position, with both languages being the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking in both languages.
Additional Notes: This is a fixed-term limited position with an initial appointment period of one year, subject to availability of funds and budgetary approval. The position is open to nationals of Jordan only, and candidates residing outside Jordan may be considered if no suitable local candidates are identified.
