Job Overview: The WASH Assistant plays a crucial role in ensuring the effective and professional implementation of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects and activities. This position is based in the Khokha district and involves daily travel to various field sites. The WASH Assistant will report directly to the WASH Team Leader (TL) and is expected to engage with local communities, ensuring that the projects align with local culture and practices. The overall purpose of the role is to promote safe WASH practices, support community hygiene initiatives, and contribute to the design and delivery of essential WASH services. The WASH Assistant will also be responsible for documenting project experiences and ensuring gender equity and social inclusion in all WASH interventions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The WASH Assistant's main responsibilities include:
Following up on fieldwork across all sites according to Bill of Quantities (BoQs), specifications, drawings, and agreed timeframes, maintaining communication with the DRC WASH team.
Providing technical and professional support to Water Management Committees (WMC) and Community Hygiene Volunteers (CHVs) on water, sanitation, and hygiene matters.
Developing BoQs and drawings for WASH construction and rehabilitation activities, ensuring accuracy and adherence to specifications.
Ensuring the availability of accurate, complete, and up-to-date information necessary for effective WASH program design, implementation, management, monitoring, and evaluation at the field level.
Promoting safe WASH practices, particularly hygiene practices in camps and host communities, and ensuring proper use and maintenance of WASH facilities and services through regular reporting.
Playing a significant role in contingency and emergency response by ensuring community involvement in the design and delivery of crucial WASH services and facilities, contributing to hygiene promotion sessions, awareness campaigns, and the distribution of hygiene aids and kits.
Supporting the design and execution of water, sanitation, and hygiene-related events at the district, school, and health clinic levels.
Coordinating with relevant institutions such as the Cleaning Fund, LWSC, and GARWSP to ensure quality interventions in consultation with the WASH TL/PM.
Facilitating the process of capturing, documenting, and disseminating project experiences, achievements, good practices, lessons learned, case studies, and progress reports related to WASH to stakeholders. 1
Ensuring gender equity and social inclusion in all aspects of WASH interventions. 1
Accomplishing other necessary activities related to WASH projects and any additional tasks assigned by the Line Manager (LM).
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for the WASH Assistant position should possess the following qualifications:
A relevant technical background in civil engineering, with a strong understanding of WASH principles and practices.
At least two years of experience in WASH and field engineering, particularly in emergency response contexts.
Proven experience in designing and preparing BoQs for WASH projects.
Proficiency in using software tools such as AutoCAD, Epanet, WaterCad, as well as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Excellent social and diplomacy skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
A minimum of one year of experience working with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and/or international non-governmental organizations (INGOs).
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a university degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the technical aspects of WASH projects and ensuring effective implementation.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have at least two years of relevant experience in the WASH sector, particularly in emergency response contexts. Experience in field engineering and working with NGOs or INGOs is also essential, with a minimum of one year of experience in such roles.
Languages: The mandatory language for this position is Arabic, as it is the mother tongue of the local population. Additionally, candidates should have a good working knowledge of written and spoken English, which is important for communication and reporting purposes.

The position is classified within the Management (I) band and reports directly to the WASH Team Leader. The start date for this role is as soon as possible, and the duty station is located in Khokha, Yemen. Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s National Terms of Employment.
