Job Overview: The Laboratory and Diagnostics Officer will play a crucial role in providing technical leadership and guidance for the USAID-funded Global Healthsecurity" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security project in Zambia. This position involves leading the development, implementation, and monitoring of strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening laboratory systems and enhancing diagnostic capacities. The officer will work closely with project management teams and key stakeholders to ensure high-quality laboratory services and effective technical assistance. Responsibilities include developing guidelines for laboratory diagnostics, contributing to project planning and evaluation, and addressing challenges related to laboratory capacity and access to quality diagnostic testing. The role requires a proactive approach to integrating new diagnostic technologies and methodologies that align with the country's health priorities, ensuring that project activities are effectively coordinated and aligned with overall goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Laboratory and Diagnostics Officer will be responsible for providing overall technical leadership for the laboratory and diagnostic services component of the STRIDES project. This includes monitoring project protocols, collaborating with national and local counterparts, and developing technical briefs and reports. The officer will lead assessments of laboratory capacity, provide mentorship to project team members, and contribute to research initiatives aimed at improving laboratory practices. Additionally, the officer will promote the adoption of new diagnostic technologies, develop project work plans, and ensure that project activities are on track with approved timelines and budgets. The role also involves building relationships with stakeholders, preparing reports for USAID, and managing procurement as needed. The officer will participate in data review and support decision-making processes based on project results and analysis.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in microbiology or an international equivalent in biological sciences relevant to clinical or medical laboratory diagnostics. A strong understanding of laboratory practices, diagnostic techniques, and quality assurance systems is essential. The ideal candidate should have experience in laboratory systems strengthening and a demonstrated ability to design and implement initiatives that enhance laboratory capacity. Familiarity with infectious diseases and their transmission, as well as experience in capacity-building activities such as training and mentoring, are highly desirable. Proven experience working with USG-funded projects and collaboration with government agencies and NGOs is also preferred.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related field is required. Candidates with international equivalents in biological sciences within a clinical or medical laboratory diagnostic discipline will also be considered. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in laboratory practices and diagnostic methodologies relevant to the role.
Experience: Typically, candidates should have at least 2 years of relevant experience working with infectious disease diagnostics or in laboratory systems strengthening. Extensive knowledge of laboratory practices, diagnostic techniques, and quality assurance systems is crucial. Experience in capacity-building activities, particularly in training and mentoring laboratory personnel, is highly valued. Prior work experience with USG-funded projects and collaboration with government agencies and NGOs is also beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as the role requires excellent oral and written communication skills. Candidates should be able to articulate complex technical information clearly and positively to clients and staff. Additional language skills may be advantageous but are not specified as mandatory.
Additional Notes: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities but requires the ability to work independently and collaboratively with various stakeholders.
