Job Overview:
The WASH Field Assistant plays a crucial role in ensuring the effective implementation of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects in accordance with local cultural practices and technical specifications. Reporting to the WASH Team Leader, the assistant is responsible for monitoring field activities, providing technical support to local Water Management Committees and Community Hygiene Volunteers, and assisting in the preparation of technical documents for WASH construction and rehabilitation projects. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying and prioritizing WASH needs, collecting and reporting field data, and organizing community-level sanitation and hygiene promotion campaigns. The WASH Field Assistant will also coordinate with local authorities and institutions to ensure quality implementation of WASH interventions, while integrating gender equity and protection principles into all activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and follow up on WASH field activities at assigned sites according to approved BoQs, technical specifications, and work plans.
  • Provide technical support to Water Management Committees and Community Hygiene Volunteers on water supply and sanitation activities.
  • Assist in preparing BoQs, technical documents, and drawings for WASH construction and maintenance.
  • Identify and prioritize WASH needs at the field level in line with DRC guidelines and national standards.
  • Collect, verify, and report accurate field data for effective program implementation and evaluation.
  • Organize and implement community-level sanitation and hygiene promotion campaigns.
  • Manage and distribute WASH supplies and IEC materials.
  • Prepare and submit regular updates on WASH activities to the line manager.
  • Assist in organizing WASH-related events, trainings, and workshops at various community levels. 1
  • Coordinate with local authorities to ensure quality implementation of WASH interventions. 1
  • Document project achievements, challenges, and lessons learned related to WASH activities. 1
  • Ensure integration of gender equity and protection principles in all field activities. 1
  • Perform other WASH-related duties as assigned by the WASH Team Leader or Manager.

Required Qualifications:
  • Relevant technical background in civil engineering as a site engineer.
  • Minimum of two years of practical experience in field/site engineering related to water projects.
  • Experience in preparing and reviewing BoQs, technical specifications, and work plans.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, EPANET, WaterCAD, and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication, coordination, and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with communities and project teams.
  • Previous experience with NGOs or INGOs is an advantage.
  • Must be a resident of Lahj Governorate.

Educational Background:
A university degree in Civil Engineering is required for this position, ensuring that the candidate possesses the necessary technical knowledge and skills to effectively contribute to WASH projects.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of two years of practical experience in field/site engineering, specifically related to water projects. This experience should include hands-on involvement in the preparation and review of technical documents and work plans, as well as field monitoring and support.

Languages:
Mandatory language: Arabic (Mother tongue). Good to have: English with very good working knowledge of both written and spoken forms, enabling effective communication in a bilingual environment.

Additional Notes:
The contract length for this position is until June 30, 2026, and it falls under the Non-Management (I) band. The position reports to the WASH Team Leader and is based in Lahj, Yemen. The salary and conditions will adhere to the Danish Refugee Council’s National Terms of Employment.
