Job Overview:
The Madrid System Expert Consultant will play a crucial role in enhancing the utilization of the Madrid System for the international registration of marks among law firms and corporate users in the United States. This position requires a deep understanding of the Madrid System, as well as the ability to engage with various stakeholders, including major IP law firms, corporate IP departments, and influential industry groups. The consultant will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive marketing strategy aimed at increasing user engagement and conversion rates. This includes conducting targeted meetings, providing expert consultation, and gathering market intelligence to inform WIPO's strategies and offerings. The consultant will also be expected to represent WIPO at key industry events and contribute to the development of marketing materials tailored to the US market.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant's duties will include:
  • Strategic User Engagement: - Prepare and execute a marketing and business development strategy to connect with current and potential users of the Madrid System. - Establish and nurture relationships with key stakeholders, including major IP law firms, corporate IP departments, and influential industry groups. - Conduct targeted meetings and consultations with agents, attorneys, law firms, and corporate users. - Engage with qualified prospects identified through WIPO's data analytics.
  • Expert Consultation and Technical Advisory: - Provide expertise on the Madrid System's legal framework and procedures. - Advise on complex filing scenarios and international trademark strategy. - Address technical and legal questions from US practitioners. - Demonstrate Madrid System tools and operational workflows.
  • Market Intelligence and Feedback: - Gather market intelligence on US needs and barriers to adoption. - Report user feedback and emerging market trends to WIPO. - Identify case study opportunities and document success stories.
  • Minimum Performance Requirements: - Achieve a minimum of 60 meetings per quarter with various stakeholders. - Convert engaged prospects into active users and track conversion rates. - Lead or co-present at a minimum of 4 events per quarter and achieve participant satisfaction ratings. - Document US-specific success stories and contribute to marketing materials.
  • User Support and Liaison: - Act as the focal point for Madrid System users in the USA, responding to queries and facilitating problem resolution.
  • Additional Tasks: - Perform other tasks as required by WIPO consistent with assignment objectives.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a university degree in law, marketing, business administration, or a related field. An active membership in a US state bar is preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience as a trademark practitioner in the USA, with a strong understanding of USPTO trademark procedures and US trademark law. Additionally, candidates should have deep expertise in the Madrid System's legal framework and strategic applications, as well as knowledge of international IP protection strategies and portfolio management. A demonstrated track record in business development and client relationship management is essential, along with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and persuasively. Integrity in handling confidential data and flexibility to travel extensively within the US are also required.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a university degree in law, marketing, business administration, or a related field. An active membership in a US state bar is preferred, indicating a recognized level of expertise and commitment to the field of intellectual property law.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience as a trademark practitioner in the USA, which may include work in an IP Office or a comparable environment. This experience should encompass a thorough understanding of trademark law and procedures, particularly those related to the Madrid System.

Languages:
The consultant must have an excellent command of English, both written and spoken. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory for this position.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration is from February 1 to July 31, 2026, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and organizational needs. The assignment may be structured on either a full-time or part-time basis, depending on mutual agreement. Compensation will include a base honorarium determined by qualifications and experience, along with a performance-based bonus for eligible international trademark applications filed. The consultant will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and expenses, which will be reimbursed by WIPO up to a maximum amount. Confidentiality regarding sensitive information is paramount, and the consultant will not be entitled to vacation or sick leave, except for WIPO official holidays.
