Job Overview: The LATAM Communications Specialist is a pivotal role within the CIMMYT LATAM Communications Team, tasked with the development, editing, and production of strategic content that effectively communicates the impact and activities of CIMMYT’s projects in Latin America. This position is integral to translating scientific innovations and project achievements into compelling narratives and communication products that align with CIMMYT’s strategic goals, including the 2030 Strategy and the Engagement Strategy 202
The specialist will work closely with various communication areas within the regional system to ensure coherence and alignment in messaging and execution of communication activities. The role also involves contributing to advocacy efforts, enhancing donor engagement, and promoting CIMMYT’s position as a leading institution in sustainable agrifood systems. This is an on-site position based at CIMMYT's headquarters in Texcoco, Mexico, near Mexico City, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and direct engagement with the organization's projects and stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Communications Specialist will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
Collaborating with the Strategy Area to co-design and execute communication plans for LATAM projects, ensuring alignment with CIMMYT and CGIAR goals.
Developing advocacy-oriented content to influence policy and strengthen partner engagement.
Supporting the creation of an annual editorial calendar that aligns with agricultural seasons and project cycles.
Tracking KPIs and visibility indicators related to project communication deliverables.
Producing high-quality editorial, digital, audiovisual, and multimedia content in coordination with the Creative Hub.
Preparing and editing various communication resources, including articles, press releases, and infographics.
Contributing to media relations by producing media-ready content and supporting press materials.
Managing content for CIMMYT LATAM’s social media channels and Spanish-language website.
Supporting internal communications to enhance staff awareness and engagement. 1
Preparing communication materials for senior leadership and documenting visits to project sites. 1
Conducting interviews and producing success stories and case studies. 1
Designing and executing communication campaigns that reflect institutional narratives and strategic priorities. 1
Capturing photography and video during field missions to document activities and gather materials for storytelling.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a degree in Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Journalism, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in communications, content development, or strategic communications is required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong analytical skills to interpret complex data and communicate technical information clearly. Excellent writing, editing, and content development skills are essential, along with experience in audiovisual documentation and digital storytelling. Proficiency in digital tools for creating engaging content is also necessary, as is the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment.
Educational Background: A degree in Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Journalism, or a related field is mandatory for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for effective communication and content development in a professional setting.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in communications, content development, or strategic communications. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing communication projects, coordinating with various stakeholders, and producing high-quality content across different formats.
Languages: Proficiency in Spanish is mandatory, as the role involves producing content primarily in Spanish. Candidates must also have the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of additional languages would be considered an asset but is not required.
