Job Overview: The HMA IM&GIS Assistant plays a crucial role in managing, analyzing, and sharing data related to humanitarian mine action (HMA) projects in Sudan. The primary objective of this position is to provide reliable, quality, and comprehensive information that supports compliance and evidence-based programming in mine action. The IM&GIS Assistant will support the implementation of HMA projects, which include Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE), surveying, and clearance activities. This role involves close collaboration with local partners and field teams to collect and analyze geographical data, create maps, and ensure effective communication of findings to stakeholders. The position requires a proactive approach to data management and the ability to utilize GIS tools for analysis and reporting, contributing to informed decision-making and effective program implementation.
Duties and Responsibilities: The key responsibilities of the HMA IM&GIS Assistant include:
Geographical Information Systems (GIS): Assist HMA teams in gathering data using various tools such as GPS, satellite imagery, and surveys. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of collected data, organize and maintain GIS databases, and utilize GIS tools for analysis and reporting. Develop maps and dashboards to illustrate collected information effectively.
Information Management Strategy: Contribute to the development of DRC’s information management systems by evaluating current processes and drafting management plans. Ensure compliance with applicable standards and guidelines related to information management and data protection.
Data Management and Analysis: Develop data collection tools and methodologies, design database systems, and automate data collection processes. Analyze and interpret datasets to identify trends and patterns relevant to mine action.
Information Dissemination: Support the creation of reports, charts, and infographics to facilitate information sharing with external stakeholders. Contribute to the development of a dissemination plan for all information products.
Collaboration with MEAL Team: Work with the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) team to support monitoring and evaluation activities, including designing data collection tools and executing surveys related to HMA activities.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for the HMA IM&GIS Assistant position should possess the following qualifications:
Knowledge of different data collection methodologies and proven capacity to analyze statistical information.
Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS, Survey123, or similar tools is desirable.
Proven abilities in data collection, compilation, analysis, and reporting, with effective oral communication skills.
Excellent planning and organizational skills, along with knowledge of humanitarian mine action and information management requirements.
Educational Background: Candidates must have a university degree in a relevant field such as Information Technology, Information Systems, Statistics, or Social Sciences. This educational background is essential for understanding the technical aspects of information management and GIS applications in humanitarian contexts.
Experience: The position requires at least 1 year of relevant experience in information management, database management, mapping, and web development. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with data collection methodologies and the ability to analyze and interpret statistical information effectively. Experience in the humanitarian sector, particularly in mine action, is highly desirable.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic is mandatory, along with a good knowledge of the English language (both verbal and written). Proficiency in English is important for effective communication and reporting within the organization and with external stakeholders.
