Job Overview:
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) at EBRD plays a crucial role in supporting the bank's mission by handling all legal aspects of its lending and investment transactions. The OGC is seeking talented lawyers to join its Associate Programme, which offers a unique opportunity for associates to contribute their country, language, and academic knowledge to support the institution's operations. Associates will be involved in the legal aspects of EBRD's banking operations, providing legal advice, conducting legal research, and drafting legal documentation. This role is essential for ensuring that EBRD's operations align with legal standards and contribute to the sustainable development of the regions in which it operates. Successful candidates will be offered a fixed-term contract for three years, starting around September 1, 2026, and will work in a dynamic and diverse environment that values inclusivity and innovation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the Associate Lawyer include:
  • Assisting in the legal aspects of EBRD's lending and investment operations, including drafting and negotiating legal documentation.
  • Conducting thorough legal research to support the bank's operations and policy development.
  • Providing legal advice on institutional and administrative matters.
  • Collaborating with various stakeholders within the bank to facilitate smooth operations.
  • Contributing to the legal transition program aimed at promoting sustainable development in the bank's regions of operation.
  • Monitoring and managing multiple activities concurrently under time constraints.
  • Engaging with clients and stakeholders to ensure a client-focused approach in all legal matters.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a law degree and preferably a postgraduate degree from a recognized university. They should have a solid understanding of legal principles and practices relevant to EBRD's operations. A minimum of 3-5 years of prior work experience as a lawyer in either private practice or an in-house legal team is required. Familiarity with the legal areas pertinent to EBRD's operations, including experience in conducting legal research and drafting legal documents, is essential. Candidates should demonstrate excellent project management skills, interpersonal and communication abilities, and a strong client focus.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should have a law degree from an accredited institution. A postgraduate degree in law or a related field is preferred, as it demonstrates advanced knowledge and expertise in legal matters. Continuous professional development and training in relevant legal areas are also advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have between 3 to 5 years of relevant legal experience, preferably in a banking or financial services context. Experience in multiple jurisdictions is considered an asset, as it enhances the candidate's ability to navigate the diverse legal landscapes in which EBRD operates. Previous legal work experience in the bank's countries or regions of operation is highly desirable.

Languages:
A strong command of written and spoken English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, fluency in one or more of the key languages relevant to EBRD's operations, such as Arabic, French, Russian, or Ukrainian, is preferred. This linguistic capability will facilitate effective communication and collaboration within the diverse regions served by the bank.
