Job Overview: The Project Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of programmatic activities that focus on peacebuilding, resettlement, reintegration, land-related interventions in post-conflict contexts, and community stabilization. This position is vital for ensuring that the projects align with IOM policies and procedures. The Project Assistant will work under the overall supervision of the Head of the Protection Unit and the direct supervision of the Senior Project Associate, coordinating with various stakeholders including government and non-government entities. The role involves a mix of administrative support, project monitoring, and community engagement, making it essential for the successful execution of IOM's initiatives in Sri Lanka.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Project Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: assisting in the implementation and monitoring of project activities related to peacebuilding and community stabilization; compiling and presenting information on specific project topics; monitoring project budgets and verifying fund availability; coordinating administrative actions with diverse organizational units and external parties; drafting status reports and maintaining beneficiary assistance files; assisting in psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">psychosocial support activities; preparing documentation for reintegration assistance; organizing meetings, workshops, and training sessions; undertaking field visits to monitor project activities; and responding to general inquiries. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying shortfalls in project delivery and bringing them to the attention of supervisors.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school diploma with four years of relevant professional experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in development, peace and conflict studies, international relations, social sciences, law, or a related field from an accredited institution with two years of professional experience. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. The position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma with extensive professional experience or a Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields such as development, peace and conflict studies, international relations, social sciences, or law. The degree must be from an accredited academic institution recognized by the UNESCO World Higher Education Database, ensuring that candidates have a solid foundation in the principles and practices relevant to the role.
Experience: Candidates should have experience in providing administrative or operational support for projects in areas such as reintegration, resettlement, community stabilization, and social cohesion. Experience in assisting with field activities, data collection, or beneficiary support is preferred, particularly with UN agencies, international organizations, or NGOs. Familiarity with local communities and supporting psychosocial or community-based initiatives will be considered an advantage, as this role involves direct engagement with affected populations.
Languages: Fluency in English and Tamil is required for this position, both oral and written. IOM's official languages include English, French, and Spanish, but proficiency in English and Tamil will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments. This language requirement is crucial for effective communication with stakeholders and beneficiaries in the region.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Sri Lanka will be considered. The offer made to the candidate is contingent upon funding confirmation, and the selection process may be used to fill similar positions in various duty stations. Recommended candidates will remain eligible for appointment in similar roles for a period of 24 months. The appointment will also be subject to medical fitness certification and verification of residency and visa requirements.
