Job Overview: This internship is designed to provide a comprehensive experience within the Exhibits Unit, which is part of the Visitors Services Section in the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications. The primary function of the Exhibits Unit is to engage and educate the public about the United Nations' ideals and activities through thematic and educational exhibits. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to the production and review of exhibits displayed at UN Headquarters and on the UN Exhibits website. Interns will work closely with a staff member in the Exhibits Unit and will be involved in various tasks that support the overall operations of the Unit, depending on their background and the current projects.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: supporting communication and outreach activities related to UN exhibitions, which involves drafting and editing content for the website and social media, as well as monitoring social media output; researching, compiling, and organizing materials for the development of UN exhibitions; designing exhibit materials as needed; assisting with the planning and organization of exhibit installations and opening events; providing general office support, such as drafting correspondence, maintaining files and databases, and organizing meetings; and supporting the work of the Visitor Services Section. Interns may also be required to perform other duties as assigned by their supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent), or be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study related to the internship is necessary. Good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word and MS PowerPoint, is essential. Additionally, the ability to draft short articles and social media posts is desirable, along with proficiency in design software applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Canva.
Educational Background: Candidates must be students in their final year of a bachelor's degree program, or enrolled in or have completed a master's or Ph.D. program. The educational background should be relevant to the internship, ideally in fields related to communications, public relations, design, or international relations.
Experience: While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the Exhibits Unit. This may include experience in communications, design, or project management through academic projects or volunteer work.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the UN.
Additional Notes: This internship is a full-time, in-person position based in New York, with the possibility of adjustments based on the successful candidate's requests. Interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns must ensure they have the necessary hardware, software, and internet connection to perform their duties.
