Job Overview: The Senior Protection Coordinator will play a crucial role in leading the Protection Unit within IOM Turkiye. This position involves overseeing and coordinating all protection-related activities, ensuring the effective integration of protection activities throughout all areas of mission operations. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with programme managers to develop and manage the implementation of the country protection strategy, which includes planning and implementing protection programmes. The role requires strategic oversight, leadership, and management of the Protection Unit, including staff management, recruitment, supervision, resource mobilization, and monitoring the quality of activities. The Senior Protection Coordinator will also be responsible for ensuring that protection activities are consistent with audit and donor requirements, advocating for the protection division mandate, and providing guidance for training and capacity building sessions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Protection Coordinator will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to: leading the Protection Unit and providing thematic guidance; developing and managing the implementation of the country protection strategy; overseeing the implementation of protection activities in key programmes; ensuring the integrity and quality of the response for persons with specific needs and vulnerabilities; maintaining oversight of project cycles; advocating for and disseminating the protection division mandate; developing and updating an IOM Protection strategy; ensuring regular collaboration and communication among all protection colleagues; actively participating in internal and multi-partner senior management coordination meetings; representing IOM in coordination fora; establishing and strengthening partnerships with key stakeholders; and preparing reports covering protection-related activities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Law, Political or Social Sciences, International Relations/Cooperation/Humanitarian Aid, Human Rights, Social Work, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with seven years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a University degree in the above fields with nine years of relevant professional experience is acceptable. Specific experience working within the humanitarian protection sector, including established programme coordination, representation, and managerial responsibilities, is required. Proven experience managing complex emergency, humanitarian, and transitional programming is essential, along with demonstrated experience in implementing and supervising case management programmes and in the field of prevention of and response to sexual and gender-based violence.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in relevant fields such as Law, Political or Social Sciences, International Relations/Cooperation/Humanitarian Aid, Human Rights, Social Work, or a related field. Candidates with a University degree in these fields must have additional years of relevant professional experience to qualify for the position. The educational qualifications are critical as they provide the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding the complexities of migration and protection issues.
Experience: Candidates should have extensive professional experience in the humanitarian and development fields relating to migration, refugee, and IDP issues, showing increasing levels of responsibility. Specific experience in managing complex emergency and humanitarian programming, as well as experience in advocacy on sensitive matters, is highly valued. Additionally, candidates should have experience in liaising with governmental authorities and other national/international institutions, and in coordinating activities with various stakeholders both at the global level and in the field.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, both oral and written. Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and French) and/or Turkish is considered an advantage. Proficiency in the required languages will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: This position is a fixed-term contract for one year with the possibility of extension. It is classified at the P-4 grade level and is a professional recruitment type. The appointment is subject to funding confirmation and candidates must be medically fit for appointment, meet residency or visa requirements, and obtain security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security clearances. The selection process may be used to staff similar positions in various duty stations, and recommended candidates will remain eligible for appointment in a similar position for a period of 24 months.
