Job Overview: The position of Artistic Photographer is integral to the EU 4 Gender Equality programme, which aims to challenge gender stereotypes and promote gender equality in Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. The photographer will be responsible for capturing compelling, human-centered photo stories that reflect the changing roles of women in these regions. This role requires the photographer to travel to each of the four countries to document the experiences of women who are redefining womanhood amidst challenges such as war and political crises. The photographs will serve as a visual narrative that highlights the resilience and leadership of women, contributing to the broader goals of the programme. The consultant will work closely with the EU 4 Gender Equality Regional Team and will be expected to produce high-quality images that align with the programme's thematic areas, including the prevention of violence against women and women's economic empowerment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Artistic Photographer will undertake the following duties:
Travel to Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine to document the stories of women who challenge discriminatory stereotypes and lead change.
Identify and photograph selected women whose stories represent changing gender norms in collaboration with the EU 4 Gender Equality regional team and UN Women and UNFPA country offices.
Produce a coherent visual narrative from each country, delivering approximately 15-20 high-quality photos per country.
Capture contextual imagery, including landscapes, work environments, and community scenes, to accompany portraits.
Provide short written captions and story notes for each photo subject.
Prepare a final curated selection of around 40-50 images for an exhibition in Brussels, showcasing the impact of the EU 4 Gender Equality programme.
Ensure all photographs include signed consent forms, captions, location data, and narrative descriptions of the subjects.
Maintain high-quality delivery under challenging circumstances, including travel to diverse environments and tight timelines.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in photography, visual arts, media studies, communications, journalism, or a related field. Formal training or certification in photography, visual communication, or media production is considered an asset. A university degree in arts, media, communications, or a related discipline is also advantageous. The candidate should demonstrate strong visual storytelling skills and a mastery of composition, lighting, and narrative framing relevant to social change and gender equality documentation.
Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in photography, visual arts, media studies, communications, journalism, or a related field is required. Additional formal training or certification in photography or visual communication is a plus. A university degree in arts, media, communications, or a related discipline is also beneficial for this role.
Experience: Candidates should have more than 2 years of proven experience in documentary or photojournalistic projects, particularly those focused on human rights, gender equality, or social issues. Experience working in complex contexts and conflict-affected environments is essential. The ability to deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines is crucial, as is demonstrated experience with international organizations or media outlets.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the regions of Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine would be considered an asset, enhancing the photographer's ability to engage with diverse communities and subjects effectively.
Additional Notes: This is a home-based consultancy position, meaning the consultant will not be required to maintain a continuous presence at UN Women premises. Coordination will be conducted remotely in collaboration with UN Women and UNFPA teams. The consultant will undertake up to four official trips to the programme countries, with each mission expected to last between 5 to 7 days. All travel arrangements will be made in consultation with UN Women and must comply with UN security and logistical requirements. The expected completion time for deliverables includes a work plan by 20 December 2025 and a curated selection of photos for the Brussels exhibition by 10 February 2026.
