UN-Habitat's External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division (ERSKID) is crucial in leading the agency's corporate strategy, external partnerships, resource mobilization, advocacy, communications, and knowledge management, thereby enhancing the agency's visibility and stakeholder engagement at a global level.
Job Overview: The UN Volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of Communication, focusing on developing and implementing a comprehensive digital communication strategy that enhances UN-Habitat's global digital presence. This role will particularly emphasize amplifying the World Urban Forum (WUF) through effective social media strategies. The volunteer will manage UN-Habitat's social media accounts, ensuring strategic content planning and audience engagement, while also providing dedicated support for WUF-related campaigns. The position requires the design and production of high-quality multimedia and communication materials for digital and promotional use, ensuring visual consistency and platform optimization. The volunteer will also develop a content calendar aligned with key international events and UN-Habitat activities, creating engagement strategies to connect with target audiences such as youth, policymakers, and urban development practitioners. Additionally, the role involves monitoring social media conversations, providing real-time coverage for live events, and analyzing the performance of digital campaigns to inform future strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the UN Volunteer include: developing and implementing a comprehensive digital communication strategy; managing UN-Habitat's social media accounts; providing support for WUF social media accounts; designing and producing multimedia communication materials; maintaining a content calendar; developing engagement strategies; sourcing and repurposing content; providing real-time social media coverage; monitoring digital conversations; developing strategic responses to inquiries; tracking and analyzing campaign performance; establishing partnerships with stakeholders; training UN-Habitat staff on digital engagement; researching global trends in digital communications; managing reputational risks; and performing other related duties as required. Furthermore, the volunteer is expected to strengthen their understanding of volunteerism, participate in UNV activities, contribute articles for publications, assist with the UNV Buddy Programme, and promote online volunteering.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a strong understanding of digital communication strategies, social media management, and content creation. The volunteer should possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and have the ability to engage with diverse audiences. Proficiency in using digital tools and analytics for monitoring and reporting is essential. The candidate should also demonstrate creativity in designing multimedia content and have experience in developing engagement strategies. Strong organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment are necessary, along with a proactive approach to problem-solving and adaptability to changing circumstances.
Educational Background: Candidates for this position should have a background in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field. A degree in a relevant discipline is preferred, and additional certifications in digital marketing or social media management would be advantageous. Knowledge of urban development issues and the Sustainable Development Goals is also beneficial.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have prior experience in digital communications, social media management, or a related field. Experience working with international organizations or in a multicultural environment is highly desirable. Familiarity with the UN system and understanding of human settlement issues will be considered an asset. The volunteer should demonstrate a track record of successfully managing digital campaigns and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the working language of UN-Habitat. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly French or Spanish, would be considered an asset, as it would enhance communication with a broader audience and facilitate engagement with various stakeholders.
