Job Posting Organization: The Environment and Development Division (EDD) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is dedicated to promoting sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. Established to address pressing environmental and developmental challenges, ESCAP works with member states to enhance their capacities and foster regional cooperation. Job Overview: The consultant will be integral to the implementation of the ESCAP Project, which aims to enhance investments in nature-based solutions (NBS) for climate action, particularly in the context of post-COVID-19 recovery. This role involves conducting research and technical facilitation to support the project's objectives, which include assessing the status of coastal ecosystems, developing governance frameworks, and building capacity for blue carbon investments. The consultant will work closely with local communities and governments to empower them in sustainable practices and investments, ensuring that the benefits of climate action are equitably distributed. The position requires a proactive approach to networking and collaboration, as well as the ability to formulate coherent strategies tailored to the specific needs of each target country.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive research on nature-based solutions and their role in climate action, focusing on coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass.
Facilitate technical discussions and workshops to gather insights and foster collaboration among stakeholders.
Prepare concept notes and briefs that outline strategies for implementing project activities in targeted countries.
Assess the capacity needs of local governments and communities regarding blue carbon investments and develop tailored capacity-building materials.
Organize study tours and regional exchanges to promote best practices in blue carbon investment.
Strengthen regional networking efforts to enhance collaboration on climate action initiatives.
Monitor and evaluate project progress, providing recommendations for improvements and adjustments as necessary.
Engage in advocacy efforts to raise awareness about the importance of empowering local communities in climate action.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate must possess a Master's degree in natural resources management, environmental sciences, or a related field. A minimum of five years of program and/or knowledge management experience in environmental issues within the Asia-Pacific region is essential. The candidate should have a strong background in ecosystems restoration, biodiversity, blue carbon, environmental governance, climate action, and sustainability. A proven track record in writing and publications is also required, demonstrating the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a Master's degree in a relevant field such as natural resources management, environmental sciences, or a closely related discipline. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of environmental issues and developing effective strategies for climate action.
Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant experience is required, particularly in program management or knowledge management related to environmental issues in the Asia-Pacific region. This experience should encompass areas such as ecosystems restoration, biodiversity, blue carbon initiatives, environmental governance, and sustainability practices. The candidate should also have experience in writing and publishing research findings or policy briefs.
Languages: The consultant must have an excellent command of written and spoken English, as this is essential for effective communication and documentation of project activities.
