Job Overview:
The Communications Specialist position is focused on enhancing the visibility and effectiveness of the United Nations' initiatives related to chemicals and waste management. The role involves developing and implementing communication strategies that align with the organization's goals. The specialist will be responsible for creating engaging content for various platforms, including social media, and ensuring that the messaging is consistent and impactful. The position requires a proactive approach to managing communications and fostering relationships with stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and the public. The specialist will also be expected to contribute to the development of reports and other written materials that communicate the UN's work in this critical area.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies for projects related to chemicals and waste management.
  • Create and review written outputs, including reports, articles, and social media content.
  • Coordinate with various stakeholders to ensure effective communication and dissemination of information.
  • Establish and manage a taskforce or working group focused on communications initiatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Collaborate with other UN agencies and partners to align messaging and maximize outreach efforts.
  • Provide training and support to team members on communication best practices.
  • Stay updated on trends and developments in the field of chemicals and waste management to inform communication efforts.

Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Communications, Development Studies, Project Management, Environmental Sciences, or Environmental Management.
  • A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in communications, project or programme management, or chemicals and waste management topics.
  • Proven experience in developing and coordinating communication strategies and materials.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to articulate messages clearly and effectively.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Communications, Development Studies, Project Management, Environmental Sciences, or Environmental Management. Alternatively, a first-level university degree with additional qualifying experience may be considered.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional work experience. Candidates should have experience in communications, project management, or chemicals and waste management. Experience in developing and implementing communication strategies, as well as familiarity with GEF funded projects, is preferred. Additionally, experience in establishing and coordinating taskforces or working groups is advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for this position. Knowledge of French is desirable, as both languages are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills to effectively convey messages and engage with diverse audiences.
