Job Posting Organization: The position is located within the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) Programme in the Division on Technology and Logistics (DTL) of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Job Overview: The Graphic Design Assistant plays a crucial role in the ASYCUDA Programme by providing high-quality graphic design services for various UN-sponsored activities. This position requires the incumbent to engage with clients to understand their design needs and objectives, ensuring that the final products align with the communication goals of the organization. The Graphic Design Assistant will independently manage design assignments, which may include creating promotional materials for major conferences, events, and campaigns. The role demands creativity and technical proficiency in graphic design, as well as the ability to work under tight deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality. The incumbent will also be responsible for preparing designs for final review and printing, ensuring that all materials meet the required specifications and are delivered on time. Additionally, the Graphic Design Assistant will provide guidance and support throughout the project production process, coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure smooth execution of design projects.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Graphic Design Assistant include:
Participating in initial meetings with clients to discuss design projects, including content, objectives, media options, technical specifications, costs, and deadlines.
Independently undertaking design assignments for a variety of UN-sponsored activities, conceptualizing and developing design proposals for client review.
Preparing all approved designs in electronic format for final review and printing, and reviewing color and print proofs as necessary.
Providing guidance and support throughout the project production process, coordinating with clients and relevant parties such as copy and proofreaders, production staff, and library personnel.
Ensuring that projects are completed on schedule and meet quality standards.
Performing other related work as required, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with specialized training in graphic arts being highly desirable. Candidates should possess knowledge of standard industry production and printing processes, including desktop publishing, design, and layout. A strong understanding of internal UN printing practices and operations is also beneficial. The ideal candidate will have good graphic art skills and the ability to independently develop creative designs for various print media projects, demonstrating a commitment to quality and attention to detail.
Educational Background: Candidates must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Specialized training in graphic arts is highly desirable, as it equips candidates with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this role. This educational background will provide a foundation in design principles, software proficiency, and an understanding of the production process.
Experience: A minimum of seven years of experience in publications production, including desktop publishing, graphic design, and layout, is required for this position. Experience in developing targeted promotional materials and customized documentary flowcharts is desirable. Additionally, candidates with experience in publication production related to customs and international trade will have an advantage, as this knowledge is relevant to the work of the ASYCUDA Programme.
Languages: The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this position, proficiency in English is required at UN Level II. Candidates should also have a working knowledge of either French, Chinese (Mandarin), Spanish, Arabic, or Russian, which are considered desirable languages for this role. Proficiency levels in these languages will be assessed according to the UN Language Framework, ensuring that candidates can effectively communicate in a multilingual environment.
Additional Notes: This is a temporary position with an initial duration of three months, subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funds. The position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that candidates must be residing in the country or within commuting distance of the office.
