It is the leading UN agency in the field of migration, working closely with governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, providing services and advice to governments and migrants. The organization has been operating in Papua New Guinea (PNG) since 2001, focusing on complex emergencies and humanitarian relief while building the capacity of the Government for better migration management. IOM operates through its Country Office in Port Moresby and has 12 field offices across the country, with programs that include disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness and response, peacebuilding, labor mobility and human development, climate change, countering trafficking in persons, immigration and border governance, legal identity, protection, assisted voluntary return and reintegration, migration, and health.
Job Overview: The internship-programme" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Internship Programme at IOM aims to attract talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM's programs and activities. Interns are expected to be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. The program is designed to provide interns with practical experience in the field of migration and humanitarian work, allowing them to contribute to IOM's mission while gaining valuable skills and knowledge. Interns may be required to hold a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations or be sponsored by governmental or non-governmental institutions to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor. The internship is an opportunity for individuals to engage in meaningful work that supports IOM's objectives and to develop their professional competencies in a dynamic and diverse environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible for providing effective and timely human resourcesadministration support for all local staff and non-staff in the Mission. Key responsibilities include:
Providing clerical assistance for the smooth running of Human Resources processes and activities in the office.
Assisting in recruitment processes, including circulation of vacancy announcements, interview arrangements, preparation of materials necessary for interviews and technical tests, support with reference checks, and sending out messages to candidates.
Maintaining orderly personnel files of staff (both electronic and hard copies) and other documents in the Human Resources Unit.
Assisting in the retrieval, drafting, and formatting of reports, letters, notes, and other Human Resources-related correspondence as directed.
Supporting the organization of meetings, training activities, and other Human Resources events by carrying out logistical activities such as arranging meeting facilities, equipment, materials, and preparing correspondence and documents.
Performing other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, or a related field. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, E-mail, and Outlook is essential. Attention to detail and the ability to organize paperwork in a methodical way are crucial. Candidates should be discreet, detail-oriented, client-oriented, patient, and willing to learn new things. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required, along with good interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, or a related field. Candidates should either be enrolled in the final academic year of their first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated within the last 12 months.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 1 year of work experience in HR-related areas, which is considered an advantage. The level of experience required is entry-level, suitable for recent graduates or those with limited professional experience in the field of human resources.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in Tok Pisin is also required. IOM’s official languages include English, French, and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages may be evaluated during the selection process, which could include written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: Any offer made to the candidate in relation to this vacancy notice is subject to funding confirmation. The appointment will be contingent upon certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, verification of residency, visa, and authorizations by the concerned Government, where applicable. Depending on experience and location, interns may receive a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. However, interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend. IOM covers interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP) free of charge for the duration of the assignment. It is important to note that IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational accidents and illnesses, and interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for such cases. IOM has a zero-tolerance policy on conduct that is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and IOM, including sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, abuse of authority, and discrimination based on gender, nationality, age, race, sexual orientation, religious or ethnic background, or disabilities. Additionally, IOM does not charge a fee at any stage of its recruitment process and only accepts duly completed applications submitted through the IOM online recruitment system.
