It is the leading UN agency in the field of migration, working closely with governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, providing services and advice to governments and migrants. The organization has been operating in Papua New Guinea since 2001, focusing on complex emergencies and humanitarian relief while building the capacity of the Government for better migration management. IOM operates through its Country Office in Port Moresby and has 12 field offices across the country, with programs that include disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness and response, peacebuilding, labor mobility, human development, climate change, countering trafficking in persons, immigration and border governance, legal identity, protection, assisted voluntary return and reintegration, migration, and health.
Job Overview: The internship-programme" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Internship Programme at IOM aims to attract talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM's programs and activities. Interns are expected to be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. The program is designed to provide interns with practical experience in the field of migration and humanitarian work, allowing them to contribute to IOM's mission while gaining valuable skills and knowledge. Interns may be required to hold a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations or be sponsored by governmental or non-governmental institutions. The internship is an opportunity for individuals to engage with IOM's work and gain insights into the operations of a leading international organization.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will assist in preparing online invoices for monthly payments, including utilities, consultant fees, staff salaries, and external services. They will provide clerical support to the finance office on its daily administrative and financial activities, ensuring the smooth running of administrative functions in accordance with the Mission’s regulations and procedures. Interns will prepare and post accounting transactions, follow up with relevant staff for missing documents, and provide general logistic support such as photocopying and scanning documents. They will maintain an efficient filing and e-filing system for financial documentation and ensure timely filing in chronological order. Interns will verify invoices and supporting documentation, ensuring compliance with IOM financial management rules before processing payment requests. They will assist in processing staff services such as travel and expense claims, support the finance assistant team in completing accounting documents, and help maintain accuracy in financial tracking and record-keeping. Additionally, interns will assist in preparing financial reports and monitoring project commitments and expenditures, clear and follow up on mission vendor maintenance, and handle petty cash accounts while ensuring compliance with financial management rules.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, administration, or related fields from an accredited academic institution. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, is essential. Attention to detail and the ability to organize paperwork methodically are crucial. Candidates should demonstrate discretion, client-oriented behavior, patience, and a willingness to learn new things. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required, along with good interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, administration, or related fields from an accredited institution. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the financial and administrative tasks that interns will be responsible for during their internship at IOM.
Experience: Interns are expected to have at least 1 year of work experience in finance-related areas, which is considered an advantage. This experience will help interns navigate the financial responsibilities they will encounter during their internship and contribute effectively to the finance team.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in Tok Pisin is also required. IOM's official languages include English, French, and Spanish, and candidates may be evaluated on their language skills during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: Any offer made to the candidate is subject to funding confirmation. The appointment will be contingent upon certification of medical fitness, verification of residency, visa, and necessary authorizations by the concerned government. Depending on experience and location, interns may receive a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. However, interns who receive an internship allowance or scholarship that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan for the duration of the assignment, but does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational accidents or illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance and must provide proof of coverage before starting work. IOM maintains a zero-tolerance policy on conduct incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and IOM, including sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, and discrimination. IOM does not charge any fees during the recruitment process and only accepts applications submitted through the IOM online recruitment system.
