Job Overview: The position of Consultant international/National is focused on providing specialized medical care for women detainees in Algeria. The consultant will be responsible for assessing the medical needs of these women, developing appropriate care plans, and ensuring that they receive the necessary medical attention. This role requires a deep understanding of the healthcare challenges faced by incarcerated women, including mental health issues, reproductive health, and access to general medical services. The consultant will work closely with local authorities, healthcare providers, and NGOs to implement effective healthcare strategies and improve the overall health outcomes for women in detention. The mission is expected to last for 12 months, from December 2025 to November 2026, with a total of 45 working days spread throughout the contract period.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for the following duties:
Conduct comprehensive assessments of the medical needs of women detainees, including physical and mental health evaluations.
Develop and implement individualized care plans based on the assessments.
Collaborate with local healthcare providers to ensure that detainees receive timely and appropriate medical care.
Provide training and capacity-building for local healthcare staff on best practices for treating women in detention.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of healthcare interventions and make necessary adjustments to care plans.
Prepare detailed reports on the health status of women detainees and the effectiveness of the healthcare services provided.
Advocate for the rights and health needs of women detainees within the justice and healthcare systems.
Engage with stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and international organizations, to promote awareness and support for women's health issues in detention.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a medical degree (MD or equivalent) and have specialized training in women's health, psychiatry, or a related field. Additionally, candidates should have experience working in correctional health settings or with vulnerable populations. Strong analytical and communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. Knowledge of the legal and ethical issues surrounding healthcare in detention is also required. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to gender equality and the rights of women.
Educational Background: A medical degree (MD or equivalent) is required, along with specialized training in women's health, mental health, or a related field. Additional certifications in public health or healthcare management would be advantageous. Candidates should have a strong academic background and relevant continuing education in the field of women's health and correctional medicine.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in healthcare, with at least 2 years of experience specifically related to women's health or correctional health. Experience working in international settings or with UN agencies is preferred. Proven track record of developing and implementing healthcare programs for vulnerable populations is highly desirable.
Languages: Fluency in French is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication in Algeria. Proficiency in English is also required, as it is often used in international contexts. Knowledge of Arabic would be an asset, as it may facilitate communication with local stakeholders and detainees.
