Job Overview:
The Director of Global Communications is a senior strategic leader at Mercy Corps, responsible for enhancing the organization's global profile, influence, and reputation through effective media engagement, storytelling, and thought leadership. This position plays a crucial role in developing and executing global media strategies that elevate Mercy Corps' visibility among key audiences, including donors, policymakers, and partners. The Director will work closely with the D.C.-based CEO and the Policy and Advocacy team to strengthen media advocacy around U.S. foreign assistance and global humanitarian issues. The role requires a blend of strategic leadership and hands-on execution, with the Director expected to manage media outreach, messaging, and day-to-day media inquiries while also shaping the future of the communications function as it expands. This position is pivotal in navigating the changing landscape of humanitarian action and public trust, and it aims to redefine how Mercy Corps communicates its mission and impact.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of Global Communications will co-lead the development and implementation of Mercy Corps' global communications strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational goals. Responsibilities include serving as a strategic advisor to senior leaders, developing engagement strategies in response to the evolving media landscape, and collaborating with various departments to advance fundraising and advocacy goals. The Director will oversee media relations, cultivate relationships with top-tier journalists, and represent the organization in high-visibility contexts. Additionally, the role involves preparing senior leaders for media engagements, managing crisis communications, and ensuring that communications reflect Mercy Corps' values and mission. The Director will also participate in team management and foster a collaborative team culture.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a BA/S or equivalent in communications, journalism, or a related field, along with at least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in communications or media relations. Established relationships with top-tier media outlets and a proven track record of generating impactful press coverage are essential. The ideal candidate should have experience serving as a spokesperson for senior executives, the ability to translate complex information into compelling narratives, and a strong understanding of the global media landscape. Exceptional cross-cultural communication skills and a commitment to ethical storytelling practices are also required.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in communications or public relations may be advantageous but are not mandatory.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in communications, media relations, or journalism, with demonstrated engagement in high-visibility contexts. Experience in international development, humanitarian aid, or related fields is strongly preferred, as is familiarity with the evolving media landscape and emerging technologies.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with additional languages being a plus. Candidates should demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively.

This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC, with limited travel requirements. The role may involve working in insecure locations and areas with limited amenities.
