At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and employs over 2,500 staff members, alongside thousands of scientists and engineers from around the world. CERN's mission is to explore the fundamental structure of the universe by using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. The organization operates in multiple countries, collaborating with various international research institutions and universities to advance knowledge in particle physics and related fields.
Job Overview: The position of Computing Engineer at CERN involves leading innovative projects that push the boundaries of robotics and automation within the Future Circular Collider (FCC) environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and integrating advanced robotic systems tailored for maintenance and operations in one of the most challenging scientific environments. This role requires a strong background in robotics, mechatronics, and project management, as well as the ability to collaborate closely with FCC stakeholders to analyze requirements and conduct cost-benefit assessments. The engineer will also oversee a small team, guiding them in the design of robotic devices and tools that enhance remote operations while minimizing human exposure to hazardous conditions. This position is ideal for individuals who thrive on solving complex problems and making a tangible impact in the field of particle physics.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Computing Engineer include leading the requirements analysis for automation and robotics systems in the FCC project, conducting cost-benefit assessments to inform strategic decisions, and driving the design and simulation of advanced robotic systems for inspection and maintenance tasks. The engineer will ensure that all designed solutions meet operational performance, safety, and reliability objectives. Additionally, the role involves directing a small team of engineers and students in the design of cutting-edge robotic devices, end-effectors, tools, and intervention procedures. The engineer will also be responsible for ensuring that all robotic systems are installed, operated, and maintained effectively, with a focus on performance, safety, and reliability. Furthermore, the engineer will need to demonstrate success in the remote operation of robotic systems in complex or hazardous environments, while effectively communicating technical topics across interdisciplinary teams.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD in Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a related field. They should have experience in robotics project management, including requirement definition, cost-benefit analysis, and team leadership. Proven abilities in designing and simulating complex robotic systems, including electro-mechanical architecture and software integration, are essential. Candidates should also have hands-on experience with the installation, operation, and maintenance of robotic systems, ensuring their performance and reliability in challenging environments. Strong communication skills and the ability to convey complex technical topics effectively are also required.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in a relevant field such as Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or Electronic Engineering. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered, particularly in areas directly related to robotics and automation.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have substantial experience in robotics project management, with a strong emphasis on requirement definition and traceability, cost-benefit analysis, and effective team leadership. They should have a proven track record in designing and simulating complex robotic systems, as well as hands-on experience in the installation and maintenance of robotic systems in operational environments. Experience in remote operation of robotic systems within complex or hazardous settings is highly desirable, along with a focus on system performance and reliability monitoring.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being a valuable asset. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered beneficial but is not required.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position under certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite at CERN in Geneva. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this job is BE-CEM-MRO-2025-246-LD. CERN values diversity and encourages applications from all Member States and Associate Member States, emphasizing the importance of a diverse workforce in achieving its mission.
