European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) About
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With a mission to probe the fundamental structure of the universe, CERN employs thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff from over 100 countries. The organization operates in multiple countries and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study fundamental particles and their interactions. CERN's commitment to diversity and inclusion is a core value, fostering a collaborative environment that enhances innovation and discovery.
Job Overview: The position of International Welding Engineer (IWE) is situated within the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group at CERN, specifically in the Forming & Welding Section (MME-FW). This role is crucial for supporting complex interventions scheduled in the underground areas of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during the Long Shutdown 3 (LS3), which is anticipated to commence at the end of 2026 and extend until 202
The selected candidate will be responsible for providing advanced technical expertise in welding and non-destructive testing (NDT), ensuring that all welding activities meet the required specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements. The role involves preparing welding activities, reviewing and updating existing procedures, drafting new procedures, and contributing to the training and qualification of welders. Additionally, the engineer will monitor welding activities underground and ensure compliance with all relevant documentation and management processes.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the International Welding Engineer include:
Preparing and planning welding activities for the LS3 underground interventions, which includes automated welding operations.
Reviewing and updating existing welding procedures and drafting new ones as necessary.
Carrying out welding qualifications in collaboration with notified bodies.
Supporting non-destructive testing (NDT) activities by reviewing and improving existing procedures and drafting new ones as required.
Contributing to the training and qualification of welders involved in LS3 underground operations.
Monitoring and following up on welding activities underground to ensure compliance with specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.
Overseeing the fabrication of complex components in CERN's main workshop and participating in quality control of the welds.
Ensuring full traceability of welding activities, including proper documentation and management of welding books.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess significant practical experience in welding engineering, with in-depth knowledge of welding standards and codes. A good understanding of destructive and non-destructive testing methods for weld inspection and qualifications is essential, along with proven experience in Radiography Testing, Visual Testing, and Metallographic Weld Inspection. Familiarity with material sciences, materials selection, and characterization as applied to welding is also required. Additionally, candidates should have experience in quality management, specifically the application of quality control standards in mechanical production, and experience drafting and implementing quality assurance documentation. Familiarity with mechanical fabrication in areas such as pressure vessels, vacuum chambers, and cryogenics is considered an asset.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a professional background in Mechanical or Materials Engineering or a related field. They must hold either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. An International Welding Engineer (IWE) diploma is also a mandatory requirement for this position.
Experience: Candidates should have a significant level of practical experience in welding engineering, demonstrating a strong understanding of welding standards and codes, as well as experience in non-destructive testing methods. The role requires a background that includes hands-on experience in mechanical fabrication and assembly, particularly in complex environments such as those found in large-scale scientific research facilities.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English or French is required, with a commitment to learn the other language. This bilingual capability is essential for effective communication within the diverse international environment at CERN.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite. The target start date for this role is February 1, 202
The position may involve work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations, requiring a valid driving license. Candidates should be prepared to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed by the organization. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 6287 to 6911 Swiss Francs (net of tax), comprehensive health coverage, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances.
