Job Overview:
The position of National Consultant for the SSR Project involves a consultancy assignment aimed at developing simplified pocketbooks on Gender, Sexual Harassment, Exploitation, and Abuse (SHEA) specifically for security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security personnel in The Gambia. This role is crucial in enhancing the understanding and awareness of gender-related issues within the security sector. The consultant will be expected to conduct thorough research, engage with stakeholders, and create accessible materials that can effectively communicate important concepts related to gender and SHEA. The assignment is set for a period of 30 working days, during which the consultant will need to deliver high-quality outputs that meet the expectations of UNDP and contribute to the overall goals of the SSR Project.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the National Consultant include but are not limited to:
  • Conducting a comprehensive review of existing literature and resources related to gender, SHEA, and security personnel.
  • Engaging with relevant stakeholders, including security personnel, gender experts, and community representatives, to gather insights and perspectives.
  • Developing simplified pocketbooks that effectively communicate key messages and guidelines on gender and SHEA for security personnel.
  • Ensuring that the materials are culturally relevant, accessible, and tailored to the needs of the target audience.
  • Presenting drafts of the pocketbooks to UNDP for feedback and making necessary revisions based on input received.
  • Finalizing the pocketbooks and ensuring they are ready for distribution.
  • Providing a report on the consultancy process, including recommendations for future initiatives related to gender and SHEA in the security sector.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position should possess the following qualifications:
  • A strong background in gender studies, social sciences, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in developing educational materials or resources, particularly in the context of gender and security.
  • Familiarity with the security sector in The Gambia and an understanding of the challenges related to gender and SHEA.
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have at least a bachelor's degree in gender studies, social sciences, international development, or a related field. A master's degree in a relevant discipline would be an advantage, as it demonstrates a higher level of expertise and understanding of complex gender issues.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in gender-related consultancy, particularly in developing training materials or resources for security personnel. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or government agencies on gender issues is highly desirable. Familiarity with the socio-political context of The Gambia and previous work in the region will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all materials will be developed in English. Knowledge of local languages spoken in The Gambia would be an advantage, as it may enhance communication with stakeholders and the target audience.

Additional Notes:
This consultancy is for a fixed period of 30 working days. The consultant will work remotely but may be required to attend meetings or workshops in person as necessary. The position is part-time, and the consultant will be compensated based on the agreed terms outlined in the contract.
