The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) was established in 1997 with the mission to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war, and improvised explosive devices. UNMAS coordinates United Nations mine action efforts, leads operational responses at the country level, and supports the development of standards, policies, and norms. Job Overview:
The intern will serve in the UNMAS Colombia Programme, located in Bogotá, Colombia, and will report directly to the Chief of Mine Action Programme (CMAP). The internship is designed to provide practical experience in the field of mine action, particularly in the context of post-conflict areas in Colombia, following the landmark peace agreement signed in 201
  • The intern will engage in various projects related to mine action, contributing to peacebuilding efforts and ensuring long-term sustainability in affected regions. The internship is unpaid and can be undertaken on either a full-time or part-time basis, with full-time interns expected to work 35 hours per week and part-time interns working 20 hours per week. The internship will follow a hybrid arrangement, combining work at the UN premises in Bogotá with remote engagement, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will undertake a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Chief of Mine Action Programme Colombia, including: assisting with the implementation of mine action projects, conducting research and analysis, drafting case studies and background papers, and providing administrative coordination. The intern will also be responsible for providing information on the location of explosive ordnance to support peacebuilding initiatives in Colombia, assisting with humanitarian actions aimed at protecting children and adolescents affected by armed conflict, and offering broad crosscutting support to the UNMAS Coordination office in Bogotá. Additionally, the intern will support the implementation of the UNMAS Colombia programme's Resource Mobilization strategy, participate in documenting decisions and actions taken on programme issues, facilitate cross-project learning and best practice transfer, and assist with the communications and visibility strategy of UNMAS Colombia Programme projects, including drafting social media content and organizing events. Furthermore, the intern will support the preparation of draft budgets and project proposals/documents for new projects to be submitted to donors.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants must be proficient in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and should have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter. Additionally, applicants should possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, demonstrating tolerance and understanding of differing opinions and views.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be enrolled in or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. Programme, or equivalent. This educational background should be relevant to the type of internship being applied for, ensuring that the intern has the necessary theoretical knowledge to contribute effectively to the UNMAS Colombia Programme.

Experience:
While prior professional work experience is not a requirement for this internship, applicants should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the internship. This could include studies in international relations, peace and conflict studies, humanitarian action, or related fields that provide a foundation for understanding the complexities of mine action and peacebuilding efforts.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
