The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LAC Office), located in Panama City, Panama, works closely with the 33 countries of the region and its activities are integrated into the Medium-Term Strategy and the Programme of Work approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

Job Overview:
The Regional Communications Specialist will serve as a consultant for the UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office, tasked with researching, coordinating, and producing digital content for various platforms relevant to the region. This role involves maintaining up-to-date databases of regional journalists, contributing to media coverage, reviewing communications materials for specific UNEP projects, and drafting reports on metrics related to websites, publications, and events. The consultant will work closely with the Deputy Regional Director and relevant staff, focusing on enhancing the visibility and outreach of key regional projects. The position requires the production of original content in both Spanish and English, across multiple formats, including written and multimedia content. The consultant will also be responsible for managing content on UNEP's platforms and thematic websites, particularly in relation to the Zero Waste in the Caribbean and Caribbean Biological Corridor projects. The overall objective is to support UNEP's work in communications, strategic partnerships, and public information, ensuring effective communication with target audiences in the Latin American and Caribbean context.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will provide comprehensive communications services and advice to the Regional Director's Office, contributing to the visibility and outreach of key regional projects. Specific duties include:
  • Producing, adapting, or editing original content for UNEP's communications platforms, including websites and social media channels, in both Spanish and English.
  • Maintaining and managing content on UNEP thematic websites, focusing on institutional communication and specific projects.
  • Researching, compiling, and presenting information for communications products and services.
  • Updating journalists' databases and contributing to media coverage of important events.
  • Reviewing communications materials for UNEP regional projects and drafting reports on metrics related to websites, publications, and events.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of the Communication Strategy for the Forum of Ministers of Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Leading the production of high-impact multi-format content and managing social media campaigns.
  • Transforming technical outputs into accessible knowledge products and establishing partnerships to amplify reach.
  • Providing comprehensive communications services, including content kits, event coverage, and publication support.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, media studies, or a related field. An advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in these areas is advantageous. Professional qualifications include at least 3 years of demonstrated competence in journalism, communications, external relations, public affairs, or corporate communications. Experience in Latin America and the Caribbean is essential, while experience in an intergovernmental organization at the international level and in science or environmental communications is desirable. Excellent writing and editing skills, proficiency in computer applications (MS Office, email, internet, Trello, web editing), and familiarity with photo and video editing tools are required. Experience in content production and management using Artificial Intelligence is also desirable.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, media studies, or a related field. An advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in communications, media studies, journalism, or a related field would be advantageous, enhancing the candidate's qualifications for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 3 years of professional experience in journalism, communications, external relations, public affairs, or corporate communications. Candidates should have a proven track record of working in the Latin American and Caribbean context, with experience in intergovernmental organizations at the international level being a plus. Experience in science or environmental communications and campaigns is also desirable, indicating a need for familiarity with environmental issues and communication strategies.

Languages:
Fluency in both Spanish and English is mandatory for this position, as the consultant will be required to produce and adapt content in both languages. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing the consultant's ability to engage with diverse audiences across the region.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is home-based with an expected duration of 12 months, requiring a regular dedication of 40 hours per week. Each payment will be disbursed upon delivery of a monthly activity report approved by the Deputy Regional Director. The final payment will require a final evaluation signed by the Deputy Regional Director and the Regional Director, validated by the Administrative Officer. The United Nations does not charge a fee at any stage of the recruitment process and does not concern itself with information on applicants' bank accounts.
