European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) About
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With a mission to probe the fundamental structure of the universe, CERN employs a diverse workforce of over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the globe. The organization operates in multiple countries and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study fundamental particles and their interactions.
Job Overview: The position within the Geodetic Metrology group at CERN involves participating in the metrology and alignment of various components used in particle physics experiments. The successful candidate will utilize advanced surveying tools and software to achieve the necessary sub-millimeter accuracy for projects, particularly focusing on the modernization of the AWAKE plasma wakefield acceleration experiment. The role requires collaboration with equipment groups and coordination of survey activities, including network measurements and alignment processes. The candidate will also be responsible for data processing and contributing to research and development activities related to alignment monitoring systems, as well as maintaining in-house surveying software applications. This position is crucial for ensuring the precision and accuracy required in high-stakes scientific experiments.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities for this position include:
Participating in the design, development, and qualification of high-precision alignment system concepts, collaborating closely with equipment groups.
Coordinating survey activities, which encompass network measurements, installation tasks, and alignment processes, from preparation and supervision to execution.
Carrying out and supervising geometrical measurements at all stages of component production, from assembly to installation, utilizing standard geodetic 3D techniques and laser tracker techniques.
Being responsible for data processing, which includes advanced stochastic analysis, documentation creation, and presentation of results.
Actively contributing to R&D activities related to alignment monitoring systems and participating in the development and maintenance of in-house surveying software applications.
Performing technical supervision of students and contractors involved in related projects.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have experience in high precision geodetic or industrial metrology, including familiarity with the instruments and methods used in high accuracy metrology. Initial experience in coordination, planning, reporting, and quality assurance aspects is considered a plus. Knowledge and application of high accuracy survey methods and tools, such as laser trackers and digital levels, are essential. Proficiency in using survey instruments like total stations and 3D laser scanners is required. Candidates should also have knowledge of standard adjustment software and data acquisition and processing software, such as Python and Spatial Analyser. Strong organizational, planning, and control skills, including the ability to supervise work, are necessary for this role.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's or Master's degree in geomatics, industrial metrology, or a related field. Candidates must have graduated within the last two years to be eligible for this position. It is important to note that applicants without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD will also not be considered for this role.
Experience: The level of experience needed for this position is a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the relevant fields of geomatics or industrial metrology. This experience should be aligned with the responsibilities and duties outlined in the job description, ensuring that candidates are well-prepared to contribute effectively to the team at CERN.
Languages: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse workforce at CERN.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with a possible extension of up to 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite. The target start date for this position is March 1, 202
It is important to note that this role involves work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations, necessitating residence in the immediate vicinity of CERN's installations. A valid driving license is required, and candidates should be prepared to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed by the organization. The job reference for this position is BE-GM-ASG-2025-247-GRAE, and the field of work is Mechanical Engineering. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 5196 to 5716 Swiss Francs (net of tax), coverage by CERN's health scheme, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances.
