The UN Resident Coordinator leads the UN Country Team in China, which includes all UN entities present in the country, working collaboratively to enhance the effectiveness of operational activities and partnerships with the Chinese government.
Job Overview: The Partnership and Protocol Intern will be part of the UN Resident Coordinator's Office (RCO) in China, which plays a crucial role in coordinating the efforts of various UN agencies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The intern will work under the supervision of the UN Partnership and Financing Officer, contributing to the development of public-private partnerships relevant to the next Cooperation Framework. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in inter-agency coordination, event management, and policy support, while also enhancing the intern's understanding of international development and the UN's role in China.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for supporting the organization of major events hosted by the RCO, which includes logistics support and drafting briefing documents and speeches. They will compile and prepare briefing and presentation materials, as well as background information on China's key policies and developments. The intern will also assist in organizing and following up on inter-agency and high-level meetings attended by the Resident Coordinator or RCO staff. Additionally, the intern will provide logistical and substantive support to incoming high-level UN delegations, ensuring that all necessary arrangements are in place for successful engagements.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in international development studies, economics, political sciences, or related fields; or (b) have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent) in the same fields. Proficiency in office software packages and web-based management systems is essential. Good graphic design skills are advantageous, as is familiarity with the Government of China and international development agencies. Experience in event management and coordination, particularly involving multiple stakeholders, is also required. Experience with other UN agencies, international organizations, or non-governmental organizations will be considered an asset.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess a graduate degree or be in the final year of a bachelor's degree program in fields such as international development studies, economics, political sciences, or related disciplines. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of international relations and development work, particularly in the context of the UN's mission and operations in China.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have relevant experience in areas such as event management, inter-agency coordination, or working with international organizations. While specific years of experience are not mandated, familiarity with the UN system or similar organizations will be beneficial. Interns should be prepared to demonstrate their ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and dynamic environment, contributing effectively to team efforts and organizational goals.
Languages: For national candidates, fluency in both written and spoken English and Chinese is mandatory. For international candidates, fluency in written and spoken English is essential, and proficiency in any other UN language is considered an asset. Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of 5 days a week, with 8 hours of work each day. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
