Job Overview: The Media and Communications Officer will play a crucial role in supporting and coordinating the implementation of IOM Afghanistan's communications and outreach activities. This position requires the officer to provide communications-related inputs that align with the mission's communication strategy, which promotes IOM's interventions, programs, and advocacy efforts. The officer will be responsible for designing and implementing a visibility strategy for IOM Afghanistan, ensuring compliance with donor visibility requirements, and maintaining high standards for all external products developed by the programs. The role also involves drafting daily social media posts, updating and enhancing the impact of the Country Office's social media accounts, and producing a monthly newsletter that highlights the impact of IOM's programs in Afghanistan. The officer will undertake regular trips to sub-offices to provide training and support to communications staff and manage communications assistants to oversee multimedia production.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Media and Communications Officer will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to: supporting the implementation of the communication strategy; providing creative and informational inputs for the visibility strategy; ensuring compliance with donor visibility requirements; coordinating with the communications team and graphic designers for high-quality content production; drafting daily social media posts; updating and monitoring the impact of the Country Office's communications; producing a monthly newsletter; conducting training for communications staff in the field; managing communications assistants; overseeing multimedia production; and performing any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Information, or a related field from an accredited academic institution, along with two years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a University degree in the same fields with four years of relevant professional experience is acceptable. Candidates should have experience in media and communications, particularly in international and crisis contexts, and demonstrate the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work independently. Proven experience in producing quality work accurately and concisely according to deadlines is essential.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Information, or a related field from an accredited institution. Candidates with a University degree in these fields must have additional relevant professional experience to qualify for the role.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience if they hold a Master's degree, or four years if they have a University degree. Experience in media and communications, particularly in international and crisis contexts, is crucial. Candidates should also demonstrate practical experience in multi-tasking, prioritizing, and working independently, along with a proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely within set deadlines.
Languages: Fluency in English (oral and written) is required for this position. Additionally, a working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, or French) and/or local languages such as Dari and Pashto is considered an advantage. Proficiency in the required languages will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: The contract for this position is a Special Short Term Graded contract, lasting up to six months with the possibility of extension. The position is classified as a Professional level role (P-2). Internationally recruited professional staff are required to be mobile, and any offer made is subject to funding confirmation. The selection process may be used to fill similar positions in various duty stations, and recommended candidates will remain eligible for appointment in similar roles for a period of 24 months. Candidates must be medically fit for appointment and meet any residency or visa requirements.
