Job Overview: The Media and Communication Officer will play a crucial role in the implementation of internal and external communication and media-related activities for IOM Haiti. This position requires the successful candidate to maintain regular contact with international, governmental, and non-governmental partners. The officer will provide communication-related information and inputs to support national and regional policy dialogue and development, particularly focusing on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and UNDS Reform. The role involves drafting press releases, public information, and talking points for various audiences, managing IOM Haiti's social media accounts, and producing quality content such as human interest stories and multimedia materials. The officer will also participate in inter-agency media and communication working groups, organize media events, and support the development of project proposals and visibility activities for donor projects. This position is vital for raising IOM's visibility and promoting its activities in Haiti.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Media and Communication Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
Assisting with the implementation of communication strategies and media activities for IOM Haiti.
Drafting press releases, public information, and talking points for various audiences.
Managing IOM Haiti's social media accounts and ensuring content aligns with IOM standards.
Producing quality content, including human interest stories, photographs, and videos.
Participating in inter-agency media and communication working groups.
Organizing media and communication events to enhance IOM's visibility.
Supporting the development of project proposals and visibility activities for donor projects.
Ensuring photographic coverage of projects and events.
Assisting with regular reporting and visibility annexes for donor reports. 1
Supporting the establishment of UN Migration Networks in Haiti. 1
Engaging with civil society and government entities to implement GCM and UNSD reform. 1
Performing other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Journalism, Mass Media Communications, Public Information, International Relations, Political or Social Science, or a related field from an accredited institution, along with two years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a University degree in the aforementioned fields with four years of relevant professional experience is acceptable. Candidates should have experience in international journalism, particularly with international organizations, and field experience in migration, humanitarian, or development sectors. Knowledge of UN/IOM regulations, project budgeting, and financial management is essential, along with excellent drafting, editing, and graphic design skills. Familiarity with online communication and social media is also required.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in relevant fields such as Journalism, Mass Media Communications, Public Information, International Relations, Political or Social Science from an accredited academic institution. Alternatively, a University degree in these fields with additional years of relevant professional experience is acceptable. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of communication in the context of international migration and humanitarian efforts.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience if they hold a Master’s degree, or four years if they have a University degree. Experience in international journalism, particularly in covering international organizations, is essential. Field experience in migration, humanitarian, or development sectors is highly advantageous. Additionally, experience with strategic planning and familiarity with the region will be beneficial for the candidate.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory for this position, both oral and written. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) and/or Haitian Creole is considered an advantage. Proficiency in the required languages will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: The successful candidate will be working in the IOM Haiti Office located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This position is classified as a Special Short Term Graded contract, with an initial duration of six months and the possibility of extension. Internationally recruited professional staff are required to be mobile, and any offer made is subject to funding confirmation. The selection process may also be used to fill similar positions in various duty stations.
