The IAEA was created in 1957 in response to the deep fears and expectations generated by the discoveries and diverse uses of nuclear technology. The Agency’s genesis was U.S. President Eisenhower’s “Atoms for Peace” address to the General Assembly of the United Nations on 8 December 1953.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. Established in 1957, the IAEA is headquartered in Vienna, Austria, and has a mission to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health, and prosperity throughout the world. The agency has a workforce of approximately 2,500 employees and operates in over 170 countries, providing a platform for international cooperation in the field of nuclear science and technology.

Job Overview:
The internship program at the IAEA is designed to provide students and recent graduates with practical work experience that aligns with their academic studies or interests. Interns will have the opportunity to engage with the IAEA's work and the broader United Nations framework, gaining insights into the organization's operations and contributing to its various programs. The internship typically lasts between three months and one year, allowing interns to immerse themselves in the IAEA's mission and objectives. Interns will support the development and implementation of activities that enhance the capabilities of Member States in areas such as networking, strategic planning, knowledge transfer, and technology development, particularly focusing on the biological and chemical aspects of innovative healthcare materials.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be expected to support the development of scientific and training materials related to radiation chemistry and technology. They will collaborate with team members to develop new products, including projects and courses, and assist in organizing and reporting on meetings related to radiation chemistry and its applications. Additionally, interns will help prepare databases for radiopharmacy and industrial irradiation facilities and assist in organizing international conferences, contributing to the overall mission of the IAEA in enhancing nuclear science applications.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in Medical Science, Pharmacy, Biology, or a related field. Proficiency in MS Word and Excel is required, along with strong communication skills. A basic understanding of the biological and chemical aspects involved in the synthesis and testing of healthcare materials is essential. Knowledge of radiation processing applications for industrial purposes is considered an asset. Good written and spoken English is mandatory, and fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is advantageous.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be at least 20 years old and have completed a minimum of three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards a first degree. They may apply up to one year after completing their bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree. It is important that candidates have not previously participated in the IAEA's internship program.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have completed at least three years of full-time university studies, which indicates a need for a foundational level of academic experience in relevant fields. While specific professional experience is not mandated, familiarity with the subject matter and prior exposure to related academic or practical environments would be beneficial.

Fluency in English is essential for this position, as it is the primary working language of the IAEA. Additionally, proficiency in any of the IAEA's official languages—Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish—is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
The internship is offered for a duration of 12 months, providing a comprehensive experience for interns.
