In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview:
The Technical Officer in Civil Society will support the implementation of the project 'Building Fairer Municipalities' under the guidance of the Specialist in Eradicating Gender-Based Violence. This role involves monitoring the actions developed by civil society organizations, ensuring the quality of project implementation, and providing technical assistance to strengthen results-based management. The officer will also coordinate activities, support inter-agency collaboration, and contribute to the development of policies and public strategies aimed at combating gender-based violence. The position requires a proactive approach to ensure that gender perspectives are integrated into all activities and that the project objectives are met effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Monitor the implementation of the 'Building Fairer Municipalities' project, including developing and applying a monitoring and evaluation plan, collecting and analyzing data on grant impacts, and coordinating with civil society organizations. Identify risks affecting project outcomes and provide inputs for mitigation strategies.
  • Provide comprehensive technical support and coordination for project implementation, ensuring quality standards and efficiency while generating synergies with other projects. This includes coordinating and reviewing specialized products, applying gender and diversity perspectives systematically, and assisting in the organization of activities.
  • Assist in inter-agency coordination meetings, support the review and drafting of inter-agency documents, and follow up on agreements.
  • Perform other functions as necessary for the efficient operation of the office and organization.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of project management, results-based management, and the ability to work in an intercultural environment. They should demonstrate proactive and dynamic work attitudes, effective communication skills, and the ability to collaborate inclusively with stakeholders. A commitment to gender issues and the ability to resolve problems creatively are essential.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in social sciences, law, or political science is required. A master's degree or two postgraduate courses in related topics is desirable, enhancing the candidate's qualifications for the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least five years of general professional experience, with four years specifically in project management related to public, private, or international entities focused on vulnerable populations. At least two years of experience in eradicating violence against women and related services is desirable. Experience within the United Nations system is considered a plus, along with solid knowledge of Microsoft Office and integrated systems used by UN Women.

Languages:
Proficiency in Spanish is mandatory, while proficiency in English is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language (French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is also desirable, enhancing communication capabilities within the organization.
