In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment:

> International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)
> Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI)
> United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
The main roles of UN Women are:
> To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms.
> To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society.
> To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview: The Research and Data Specialist (Data and Statistics) is a pivotal role within UN Women, reporting to the Chief of the Research and Data (R&D) Section. This position is responsible for implementing key elements of UN Women’s Research and Data strategy, particularly in leading the monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators related to gender. The specialist will oversee statistical work and contribute substantively to the preparation of UN Women’s flagship reports, enhancing the organization’s data science and foresight capacity. The role involves supervising a team of data professionals and ensuring the effective execution of UN Women’s broader research and data agenda. The specialist will also be responsible for establishing partnerships with data-producing UN agencies and collaborating with various sections within UN Women to build a robust evidence base for gender-related SDGs. This position requires a strong commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment, as well as the ability to manage and motivate a diverse team to achieve results in a timely manner.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the monitoring of gender-related SDGs indicators, including regular data compilation and methodological work. This includes planning, producing, disseminating, and launching the annual SDG Gender Snapshot and coordinating contributions from custodian agencies for the Secretary-General’s SDGs Report. The specialist will represent UN Women in the Inter-Agency Expert Group on SDGs and establish partnerships with data-producing UN agencies to enhance the production and dissemination of sex-disaggregated data and gender statistics.
Oversee the statistical work for UN Women’s flagship reports and related research products, including leading the statistical work for reports such as Progress of the World's Women and the World Survey on the Role of Women in Development. The specialist will prepare chapters on statistics, oversee the production of statistical annexes, and provide technical input for concept development and refinement.
Contribute to enhancing UN Women’s data science and foresight capacity by building research networks, maintaining knowledge of technologies and trends in data science, and organizing training sessions on data analysis and visualization.
Manage the development and implementation of databases, data collection systems, and data analytics strategies to optimize statistical efficiency and quality. The specialist will also manage outreach and communications materials to enhance visibility and foster collaboration.
Represent UN Women in inter-agency working groups and perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant social science discipline with a substantial quantitative component, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A PhD is considered an asset. Candidates must have expert knowledge of gender statistics, advanced knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and strong capacity in statistical analysis and econometric techniques focused on gender equality. Familiarity with data science and foresight techniques is also essential. Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage and motivate a diverse team are crucial, along with excellent strategic planning, goal setting, and prioritization skills.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant social science discipline with a substantial quantitative component. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A PhD is an asset and may enhance a candidate's profile.
Experience: At least 7 years of progressively responsible work experience in research and statistical analysis within a development policy and/or research context is required. Candidates must have experience in data analysis, research, and writing, particularly in relation to gender equality and women’s rights. Experience in SDGs monitoring from a gender equality perspective, statistical analysis, econometrics, and/or data science is also required. Additionally, experience in leading and managing personnel in international settings is necessary, along with proficiency in using computers and office software packages, including MS Word and Excel.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is desirable and may enhance a candidate's qualifications.
Additional Notes: The position is full-time and involves supervisory responsibilities, leading a team of three, including one direct report and two consultants.
