FHI 360's Crisis Response team has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts in regions affected by conflict, such as Tigray, Amhara, Afar, and Somali Regions, providing essential services through integrated health, nutrition, WASH, and protection projects. Recently, the team has expanded its operations to the Oromia Region, focusing on supporting communities affected by crises.
Job Overview: The WASH Engineer position is primarily based in the Tigray region, with responsibilities that may extend to other locations as necessary. The role focuses on enhancing the technical engineering aspects of the FHI 360 ISHI-E III program, specifically related to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities. The WASH Engineer will be tasked with managing various water and sanitation technologies, including the design and specification of boreholes, preparation of contractual documents, conducting geophysical studies, and overseeing the installation and repair of pumps. Additionally, the engineer will provide training on pump maintenance, design water distribution systems, and ensure compliance with international standards and Ministry of Health guidelines. The position requires collaboration with contractors, laborers, and local partners to ensure effective implementation of WASH initiatives and to support public health engineering components in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The WASH Engineer will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: supporting the WASH team leader in establishing relationships with government offices; assessing community needs for WASH initiatives; ensuring quality assurance for water and sanitation projects; preparing design documents and cost estimates; conducting technical training for community handlers; coordinating with stakeholders to ensure smooth operations; leading assessments and preparing intervention plans; overseeing construction activities; and ensuring integration of WASH with health and nutrition sectors. The engineer will also be responsible for monitoring project implementation, preparing reports, and maintaining communication with local authorities and communities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in humanitarian response projects, preferably with international NGOs or in community development. A Master's degree or a first degree in water resource management, civil engineering, or related fields is required. Hands-on experience in designing and managing humanitarian WASH programs is essential, along with knowledge of global WASH strategies and practices in Ethiopia. Experience in conducting assessments and representing the organization at relevant platforms is also necessary.
Educational Background: The educational requirements for this position include a Master's degree or a first degree in fields such as water resource management, civil engineering, or water supply and sanitation engineering. Candidates should have a strong academic background that supports their technical expertise in WASH-related projects.
Experience: The position requires at least 2 years of relevant experience in humanitarian response projects, particularly in WASH initiatives. Experience with community and IDP-based WASH responses in crisis situations is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate a solid understanding of the socio-economic and political context of the region, as well as experience in managing construction projects and liaising with stakeholders.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, along with a strong command of the local language. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in Ethiopia is considered an asset, enhancing communication with diverse communities.
Additional Notes: This position is full-time and may require frequent travel to various operational locations in the Amhara region. The role involves significant responsibilities in project management and coordination, ensuring compliance with FHI 360 and donor requirements.
