Job Overview:
The Unit Head (Radioactive Material Security) is a pivotal role within the IAEA's Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, specifically in the Nuclear Security of Materials and Facilities Section. This position involves overseeing the design and delivery of program activities related to the security of radioactive materials and associated facilities. The Unit Head will manage a team of nuclear security officers, prioritize and implement activities based on the needs identified by member states, and coordinate inputs from other units within the section and division. The role requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership, and strategic planning to ensure effective nuclear security measures are developed and sustained. The Unit Head will also be responsible for the development and review of nuclear security guidance, training materials, and conducting advisory services and expert missions. This position is crucial for assisting member states in enhancing their nuclear security infrastructure and ensuring compliance with international standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Unit Head (Radioactive Material Security) include coordinating IAEA activities aimed at improving the security of radioactive materials and associated facilities in member states. The incumbent will monitor and support the implementation of the Code of Conduct on Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources, develop further guidance and training materials, and deliver training courses. Additionally, the Unit Head will assist states in establishing or improving their legal and regulatory frameworks for security, review and assess physical protection designs, analyze radioactive material security information, and develop Integrated Nuclear Security Support Plans (INSSPs). The role also involves overseeing the development of relevant guidance, conducting advisory and assessment missions, and representing the IAEA at national and international meetings. The Unit Head will be responsible for planning, organizing, managing, and evaluating the work of the team, ensuring effectiveness and alignment with the IAEA's quality management approach.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in nuclear engineering, chemistry, physics, or a closely related technical field. Alternatively, a Bachelor's Degree in the same fields with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree. A minimum of seven years of relevant experience in nuclear security is required, including at least three years in a managerial capacity and operational experience. Proven national experience in the security of radioactive materials and associated facilities is essential, along with experience in leading small teams and working with national and international organizations. A good understanding of the challenges related to the implementation of the IAEA's Nuclear Security Plan is desirable. Excellent oral and written command of English is mandatory, and knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master's Degree) in nuclear engineering, chemistry, physics, or a closely related technical field. Candidates with a Bachelor's Degree in these fields may be considered if they have two additional years of relevant experience. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of nuclear security and the technical aspects of managing radioactive materials and associated facilities.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in the field of nuclear security, with at least three years in a managerial role. Additional Notes:
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $84,672, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance. Additional benefits include a variable post adjustment, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses, six weeks of annual leave, home leave travel, a pension plan, and health insurance.
