Job Overview: The Medical Director at the VIC Medical Service is responsible for leading and managing the medical services provided to the staff of various organizations based at the Vienna International Centre (VIC). This includes the IAEA, the United Nations Office of Vienna, and other related organizations. The Medical Director's primary role is to ensure the delivery of high-quality occupational health services, including mental health and preventive health activities. The position requires the Medical Director to provide medical expertise and guidance to senior management, advise on occupational health and safety management, and ensure that all medical services meet the highest international standards. The Medical Director will also be involved in strategic planning, managing human and financial resources, and fostering a culture of health and safety within the workplace.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Medical Director will design, coordinate, and implement the strategic plan for the VIC Medical Service. Responsibilities include providing advice to management on occupational health matters, managing the VIC Medical Service, overseeing primary health care, advising staff and their families on medical issues, managing medical evacuations, and supervising disability cases. The Medical Director will also collaborate with public health authorities and international health agencies, oversee clinic operations, manage health promotion activities, and ensure the effective delivery of medical-related projects. Additionally, the Medical Director will support change initiatives and foster innovative reforms to maximize the effectiveness of the medical services provided.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be qualified to practice medicine with a current medical license (MD equivalent). They should possess outstanding medical expertise, particularly in emergency care, and have a sound knowledge of clinical developments and technologies. A senior-level experience in occupational health for large, preferably international organizations, is essential. Candidates should also have a general knowledge of worldwide health conditions, requirements, and precautions. The role requires discretion and respect for confidentiality, as well as the ability to handle sensitive matters appropriately.
Educational Background: A medical degree (MD equivalent) is required for this position, along with a current medical license to practice. Additional certifications or training in occupational health, public health, or related fields would be advantageous.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 15 years of progressive clinical and administrative experience, including a minimum of 5 years working in an international setting. Practical experience in occupational health and travel medicine is essential, with at least 3 years of experience in these areas. Experience in dealing effectively with international headquarters and field staff, including high-ranking officials and delegates, is considered an asset. Previous experience within the UN medical system or in international medical contexts would also be beneficial.
Languages: Excellent oral and written command of English is mandatory. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and would enhance a candidate's profile.
Additional Notes: The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $116,095, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance. Additional benefits include a variable post adjustment, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses, and 6 weeks of annual leave.
