In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment:

> International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)
> Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI)
> United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
The main roles of UN Women are:
> To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms.
> To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society.
> To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview: The Finance and Administrative Associate position at UN Women Mozambique Country Office is crucial for supporting the development and implementation of various projects in alignment with UN Women’s rules and regulations. This role involves providing comprehensive financial management and operational support, ensuring efficient and transparent use of financial resources. The Associate will report to the Programme Coordinator and will work closely with both the programme and operations teams to address complex finance and administrative issues. The position requires a proactive approach to financial strategies, compliance with international accounting standards, and the ability to adapt processes to meet organizational needs. The Associate will also be responsible for maintaining effective communication with stakeholders and ensuring timely delivery of financial services in support of the Country Office’s objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Finance and Administrative Associate will undertake a wide range of duties including implementing financial strategies in compliance with UN Women regulations, preparing and administering budgets, providing finance support to programme and operations teams, and facilitating resource mobilization efforts. Specific responsibilities include reviewing financial transactions, monitoring financial exceptions, preparing cost recovery documents, managing petty cash funds, and assisting with audits. The Associate will also be involved in training and knowledge sharing initiatives, ensuring that best practices in financial management are disseminated among stakeholders. Additionally, the role requires maintaining internal expenditure control systems and ensuring that all financial activities are documented and reported accurately.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of financial rules and regulations, accounting principles, and the ability to execute financial processes effectively. Proficiency in IT tools and management systems is essential, along with excellent skills in spreadsheet and database applications. The Associate should demonstrate the ability to provide input for business process improvements and execute financial transactions accurately. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail are critical for this role, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
Educational Background: A minimum of secondary education is required for this position, with specialized national or international certification in accounting and finance considered an asset. A Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting is desirable. Additionally, successful completion of the UN Women Accounting and Finance Test is mandatory as part of the selection process.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in finance, demonstrating a solid background in financial management and administration. Experience with office software packages, particularly MS Word and Excel, as well as familiarity with web-based management systems, is required. Experience with modern web-based ERP systems, preferably Oracle Cloud, is also desirable, indicating a candidate's ability to adapt to new technologies and systems.
Languages: Fluency in both English and Portuguese is required for this position, as effective communication in these languages is essential for collaboration with stakeholders. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance a candidate's profile.
