In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview:
The Regional security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security and Safety Specialist for Asia and the Pacific and Arab States/North Africa is responsible for overseeing all aspects of security and safety management for UN Women in these regions. This role involves advising and supporting UN Women Headquarters, Regional, Multi-Country, and Country Offices, as well as Security Field personnel in their security responsibilities. The specialist will work under the supervision of the UN Women Global advisor" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Advisor and will coordinate with Regional Directors to ensure that security policies and procedures are effectively implemented. The position requires a proactive approach to minimize risks to personnel, property, and operations while enabling the delivery of UN Women programs. The incumbent will also be expected to travel beyond assigned regions as necessary, ensuring that security measures are in place to protect UN Women personnel and assets.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Regional Security and Safety Specialist include providing technical support and guidance to Country, Multi-Country, and Regional Offices, approving organizational missions, and participating in the development and implementation of UN Women security policies. The specialist will manage security evaluations, track developing threats, and provide timely recommendations to senior management regarding risk prevention and mitigation measures. Additionally, the role involves liaising with local and regional security communities, participating in security management meetings, and maintaining a security network. The specialist will also be responsible for collecting and disseminating security information, developing and implementing the UN Women Security Plan, monitoring compliance with Security Risk Management Measures, reporting security incidents, conducting training courses on security awareness, managing the budget and finances related to security, and supervising security staff.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in management, security, security management, business administration, law enforcement, international relations, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in these fields, combined with a multi-year education in security management, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may also be considered. Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in security, with at least 2 years in a regional security role. Experience in conducting security and safety risk assessments, budget management related to field security support, and implementation of business continuity programs is required. Experience in disaster and conflict surge support and familiarity with the UN Security Management System is desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree or equivalent in relevant fields such as management, security, or international relations. A first-level university degree in combination with extensive experience in security management may also be acceptable. Candidates with military or police senior command qualifications and command experience at a senior level are encouraged to apply. The educational qualifications should reflect a strong foundation in security principles and practices, as well as an understanding of international relations and organizational management.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in security, with at least 2 years in a regional security role. Candidates should have experience in conducting security and safety risk assessments as part of operational planning. Budget management experience related to field security support is essential, along with at least 1 year of experience in implementing business continuity programs. Experience in disaster and conflict surge support is highly desirable, as is familiarity with the UN Security Management System.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this position. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered desirable. Proficiency in multiple languages will enhance communication and collaboration with diverse stakeholders and partners in the field.

Additional Notes:
This position is based in Cairo, Egypt, and may require travel beyond assigned regions. The role is full-time and involves significant responsibilities related to security management and personnel safety.
