Job Overview: The Nurse position at IOM involves performing daily nursing activities within the Migration Health Assessment Clinic (MHAC). The role is crucial in fulfilling the technical requirements set by resettlement countries, which include conducting medical examinations, collecting samples for laboratory testing, administering vaccinations, and managing tuberculosis (TB) treatment. The nurse will also provide essential information and explanations to migrants and refugees regarding the health assessment process and necessary treatments. This position requires a commitment to maintaining high standards of care and ensuring proper identification and follow-up of health assessments. The nurse will be responsible for adhering to health assessment program protocols, maintaining medical supplies, and supporting mobile missions as needed. Additionally, the role includes performing medical escort duties to ensure continuity of care for migrants throughout their journey.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Nurse include:
Conducting medical examinations, including checking vital signs, weight, height, and visual acuity.
Collecting blood, urine, or sputum samples as required.
Performing imaging and laboratory testing.
Administering vaccinations and managing TB treatment and referrals.
Documenting and certifying health assessments and ensuring proper information transmission.
Taking comprehensive medical histories and collecting accurate biodata from migrants.
Verifying identification at each step of the health assessment process.
Maintaining a register of applicants undergoing health investigations.
Following and implementing health assessment checklists and standard operating procedures (SOPs). 1
Ensuring proper transport of laboratory samples. 1
Managing the MHAC pharmacy and medical supplies. 1
Providing pre and post-counseling on TB and HIV education. 1
Preparing administrative reports and program updates. 1
Supporting mobile missions and assisting with pre-departure documents and briefings. 1
Performing medical escort duties when required. 1
Collaborating with various partners, including internal IOM departments, health providers, and NGOs, to facilitate follow-up and information sharing. 1
Collecting and sharing statistical information with senior staff as needed. 1
Performing other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Nurse position include:
A Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited institution.
A valid nursing license to practice in the country of duty station.
For Bachelor’s degree holders, a minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience; for Diploma holders, a minimum of five years of relevant clinical experience.
Excellent technical skills, particularly in phlebotomy.
Training or experience in TB management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, laboratory testing, or public health is advantageous.
Knowledge of clinical nursing principles and practices.
Excellent bedside manner and communication skills.
Familiarity with patient safety and infection prevention protocols.
Proficiency in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Access). 1
Proven clinical expertise or a post-graduate diploma/degree in emergency care is a plus.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited academic institution. The educational background should enable the candidate to fulfill the full scope of responsibilities as defined in the position descriptions. Additionally, a valid nursing license to practice in the country of duty station is required, ensuring that the candidate is legally authorized to perform nursing duties.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience for candidates holding a Bachelor’s degree, while those with a Diploma must have at least five years of relevant clinical experience. This experience should encompass a range of nursing practices, with a strong emphasis on technical skills and knowledge in areas such as TB management, communicable diseases, and public health. Candidates should demonstrate a solid understanding of clinical nursing principles and have a proven track record of providing high-quality patient care.
Languages: Proficiency in English and Kinyarwanda is mandatory for this position. IOM’s official languages also include French and Spanish, and while proficiency in these languages is not required, it may be considered an advantage during the selection process. Language skills will be specifically evaluated, which may include written and/or oral assessments to ensure effective communication with migrants and other stakeholders.
Additional Notes: The position may require travel, and any offer made to the candidate is subject to funding confirmation. The appointment will be contingent upon certification of medical fitness, verification of residency, visa, and necessary authorizations by the concerned government, where applicable. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP) at no cost to the consultant. However, IOM does not offer evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational accidents and illnesses, and consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance. IOM has a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding conduct that contradicts the organization's aims and objectives, including issues related to sexual exploitation and abuse, harassment, and discrimination.
