The organization has been instrumental in mobilizing the Cameroonian diaspora to contribute to the country's socioeconomic development, particularly through projects aimed at developing a national diaspora mobilization strategy.
Job Overview: The Project Assistant will play a vital role in supporting the implementation of IOM's projects in Cameroon, particularly those focused on labor migration and diaspora engagement. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Chief of Mission and the Head of Programmes, collaborating with various units within the Country Office and the IOM Regional Office for West and Central Africa. The position requires a proactive approach to project management, including administrative coordination, data collection, and communication with stakeholders. The Project Assistant will assist in monitoring project budgets, compiling reports, and providing logistical support for meetings and events. This role is essential for ensuring that project activities are executed efficiently and effectively, contributing to the overall success of IOM's mission in Cameroon.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Project Assistant will be responsible for a range of duties, including but not limited to: providing general clerical assistance in project implementation; retrieving, compiling, summarizing, and presenting information on specific project topics; assisting in monitoring and updating budget-related information; supporting administrative coordination for project activities; drafting status reports, correspondence, and other documentation; providing logistical support for meetings and events; maintaining communication with local authorities, partners, UN agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders; organizing meetings, workshops, and training sessions; responding to information requests; and participating in the collection and analysis of data related to migration and development issues. The incumbent may also be required to perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a school diploma with three years of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s degree in Political or Social Sciences, International Relations, Development Studies, Migration Studies, Human Rights, Law, or related fields from an accredited academic institution, along with one year of relevant professional experience. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong organizational and multitasking skills, basic analytical skills for data interpretation, familiarity with project budgeting and procurement procedures, and effective communication skills, both written and verbal. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is also required.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes either a school diploma with three years of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Political or Social Sciences, International Relations, Development Studies, Migration Studies, Human Rights, Law, or related disciplines. Candidates must have graduated from accredited institutions recognized by the UNESCO World Higher Education Database, ensuring that their educational qualifications meet international standards.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have experience in liaising with governmental authorities, national and international institutions, UN agencies, and NGOs. Experience working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, victims of trafficking, and other vulnerable groups is essential. Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations or in a multi-cultural setting is considered an advantage, as it demonstrates the candidate's ability to navigate complex environments and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is required for this position, both oral and written. As IOM's official languages include English, French, and Spanish, proficiency in these languages is crucial for effective communication within the organization and with external partners. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with a broader range of stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Cameroon will be considered. The appointment will be contingent upon the candidate's medical fitness for the role, as well as verification of residency, visa, and necessary authorizations by the relevant government authorities. The selection process may also be used to fill similar positions in various duty stations, and recommended candidates will remain eligible for appointment in similar roles for a period of 24 months. IOM maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding conduct that contradicts the organization's aims and objectives, including issues related to sexual exploitation and abuse, harassment, and discrimination.
