Job Overview:
The Senior Economist position under the National Governance Program (NGP) is designed to provide expert economic analysis and policy advice to enhance governance and development initiatives in Pakistan. The role involves conducting in-depth economic research, analyzing data, and providing recommendations to improve public policies and governance frameworks. The Senior Economist will work closely with government officials, stakeholders, and other UN agencies to ensure that economic policies are aligned with national development goals. The position requires a strong understanding of economic principles, governance issues, and the socio-economic context of Pakistan. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the formulation of strategies that promote inclusive economic growth and sustainable development, while also addressing challenges such as poverty, inequality, and governance deficits.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Economist will be responsible for a variety of tasks including but not limited to: conducting comprehensive economic analyses and assessments; preparing reports and policy briefs on economic issues; advising on the design and implementation of economic policies and programs; collaborating with government agencies and civil society organizations to promote good governance; providing technical assistance and capacity building to local institutions; monitoring and evaluating the impact of economic policies; engaging in stakeholder consultations to gather insights and feedback; and presenting findings and recommendations to senior officials and decision-makers. The role also involves contributing to the development of project proposals and funding applications, as well as participating in UNDP's strategic planning processes.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong academic background in economics, public policy, or a related field. A minimum of a Master's degree is required, with a PhD being highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should have a proven track record of conducting economic research and analysis, as well as experience in policy formulation and implementation. Strong analytical and quantitative skills are essential, along with the ability to communicate complex economic concepts clearly to diverse audiences. Familiarity with governance issues in Pakistan and experience working with international organizations or government agencies will be considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree in Economics, Public Policy, Development Studies, or a related discipline. A PhD in a relevant field is preferred and will enhance the candidate's competitiveness for the role. Candidates should have a solid foundation in economic theory, quantitative methods, and statistical analysis, as well as knowledge of governance and development issues.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in economic analysis, policy development, or related fields. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in conducting research and providing policy advice, preferably in the context of governance and development. Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, or non-governmental organizations is highly desirable. The ability to work in a multicultural environment and engage with a wide range of stakeholders is also important.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all reports and communications will be conducted in English. Knowledge of Urdu or other local languages is considered an asset, as it may facilitate communication with local stakeholders and enhance the effectiveness of the role.

  • This is an individual contractor position, and candidates should be prepared to work flexibly within this timeframe. The role is expected to be full-time, and candidates may be required to work remotely or on-site as needed. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, and additional benefits may be provided as per UNDP policies.
