Job Overview: The Migration Health Nurse will play a crucial role in the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Yaoundé and/or Douala, Cameroon. This position involves performing a variety of nursing activities that are essential for meeting the technical requirements of resettlement countries. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting medical examinations, collecting samples, administering vaccinations, managing TB treatment, and ensuring proper documentation and information transmission. The nurse will also provide detailed explanations to migrants and refugees regarding the health assessment process and necessary treatments. The role requires a commitment to maintaining high standards of care and following established protocols to ensure the health and safety of all individuals involved in the migration process.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct daily nursing activities in the Migration Health Assessment Clinic (MHAC) to meet the technical requirements of resettlement countries, including medical examinations, sample collection, and vaccinations.
Provide comprehensive information to migrants and refugees about the migration health assessment process and necessary treatments.
Ensure proper identification and follow-up through thorough history taking and accurate biodata collection.
Implement Health Assessment Programme checklists and maintain universal precautions within the MHAC.
Verify the proper transportation of samples to designated laboratories.
Manage the MHAC pharmacy and medical kits, ensuring adequate stock levels.
Offer pre and post-counseling on TB and HIV education and management.
Prepare administrative reports and program updates as required.
Support mobile missions and assist with pre-departure documents and briefings. 1
Perform medical escort duties to ensure continuity of care for migrants. 1
Maintain collaborative relationships with partners, including internal IOM departments and external health providers. 1
Collect and share statistical information with senior staff as needed. 1
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited institution, with a valid nursing license in the country of duty station. For those with a Bachelor's degree, a minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience is required, while Diploma holders must have at least five years of experience. Candidates should demonstrate excellent technical skills, particularly in phlebotomy, and have training or experience in TB management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, and public health. Knowledge of patient safety, infection prevention, and control is essential, along with proficiency in MS Office applications.
Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited academic institution is required. The educational background must allow the candidate to fulfill the full scope of responsibilities as defined in the position descriptions. A valid nursing license to practice in the country of duty station is also mandatory.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience for those holding a Bachelor's degree, or five years for those with a Diploma. Experience in clinical nursing, particularly in areas such as TB management and public health, is highly advantageous. Proven clinical expertise or a post-graduate diploma/degree in clinical specialization, especially in emergency care, is also beneficial.
Languages: Proficiency in French is mandatory, along with at least a working knowledge of one additional UN language (Arabic, Chinese, English, Russian, or Spanish). Fluency in both French and English, both oral and written, is required for all applicants.
