Job Overview: The National security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Support Officer position is crucial for ensuring the safety and security of IOM operations in Syria. This role involves providing expert support in all security-related aspects of the Country Office's operations, under the supervision of the Chief of Mission and the Field Security Officer. The officer will be responsible for establishing and maintaining security awareness, monitoring the security situation, and developing security plans tailored to the Country Office's needs. The position requires a proactive approach to security risk management, ensuring that all personnel are informed and prepared for potential security challenges. The officer will also engage with various stakeholders, including UN security organizations and local government agencies, to gather and disseminate vital security information. This role is integral to maintaining a secure environment for IOM staff and operations in Syria, contributing to the overall mission of the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities: The National Security Support Officer will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Providing expert support in security risk management and assisting in the development of security plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Monitoring and analyzing the security situation in Syria, communicating significant events and incidents promptly.
Conducting security assessments of IOM premises, vehicles, and staff residences to ensure compliance with UN Security Risk Management Measures.
Supporting the management of the Country Office Warden system and ensuring effective communication systems are in place.
Preparing security reports, including Security Incident Reports and Weekly Reports, to keep the team informed of security incidents affecting IOM personnel and operations.
Conducting security briefings for IOM personnel and coordinating travel security requirements.
Supervising Field Security Associates to ensure the delivery of appropriate security measures.
Implementing and managing security access control procedures and conducting periodic security assessments.
Providing security policy guidance and monitoring compliance with security standards. 1
Participating in security cell meetings and providing technical inputs on security matters. 1
Responding to complex security queries and assisting in investigations related to security incidents.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in Security, Social Sciences, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Law, International Relations, or a related field from an accredited institution. A Master's degree in the aforementioned fields is also acceptable. Additionally, candidates should have at least two years of relevant professional experience in security management or related areas. Experience in humanitarian, public, private, or corporate sectors is desirable, particularly in security programs, risk assessments, and operational security management. Certification from the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in relevant security training programs is also preferred.
Educational Background: The educational requirements for this position include a university degree in a relevant field such as Security, Social Sciences, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Law, or International Relations. Candidates with a Master's degree in these areas will be given preference. The degree must be from an accredited academic institution, as recognized by the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have relevant professional experience in security management, with a focus on humanitarian or corporate sectors. Experience in security programs, risk assessments, and operational security management is highly desirable. Candidates should also have a background in conducting investigations and physical security assessments. Certification from UNDSS in security-related training programs is an asset, indicating a level of expertise and commitment to the field.
Languages: Fluency in both English and Arabic is required for this position, encompassing both oral and written communication skills. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly French and Spanish, is considered advantageous, as IOM operates in multiple linguistic contexts. Language proficiency will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and oral assessments to ensure candidates meet the necessary communication standards.
Additional Notes: The position is subject to funding confirmation, and the selection process may be used to fill similar roles in various duty stations. Recommended candidates will remain eligible for appointment in similar positions for a period of 24 months. National Professional Officers must be nationals of the country of employment and are expected to perform at a professional level, adhering to the same recruitment qualifications and performance standards as International Professional staff. Appointment is contingent upon medical fitness certification, residency verification, and necessary government authorizations.
