Job Overview:
The Senior Nuclear Safety Officer plays a crucial role in the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) at the IAEA. This position involves contributing to program plans, integrating projects, and coordinating a diverse portfolio of projects aimed at enhancing the safety of nuclear installations globally. The officer will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing activities that support the Division's objectives, which include proper site selection, installation design, and regulatory practices. The role requires a blend of scientific expertise and project management skills, as the officer will lead complex technical meetings, safety reviews, and manage integrated project teams. The position demands a proactive approach to improving operational safety and fostering international cooperation in nuclear safety standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Nuclear Safety Officer will have a variety of responsibilities, including organizing and leading teams of experts to enhance safety standards, developing methodologies for safety assessments, and coordinating activities with Member States to strengthen nuclear safety. The officer will consult with countries that have or are planning nuclear power programs to identify initiatives for capacity building, including education and training. Additionally, the officer will manage nuclear safety information systems and represent the IAEA in professional meetings and conferences. The role may involve exposure to radioactive materials, necessitating medical clearance and adherence to radiation safety regulations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in engineering, physical sciences, nuclear sciences, or a related field. A Bachelor's Degree with additional relevant experience may be considered. The position requires a minimum of ten years of relevant experience, including five years at a senior level and at least four years in an international context. Applicants should have practical experience in operational safety assessments and a strong understanding of nuclear safety principles and standards. Experience in leading technical meetings and managing multiple projects is essential, along with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Educational Background:
The educational requirements for this position include a Master's Degree in a relevant field such as engineering, physical sciences, nuclear sciences, or related disciplines. Alternatively, a Bachelor's Degree in a similar field, combined with two additional years of relevant experience, may be acceptable. The emphasis is on advanced knowledge and expertise in nuclear safety and operational practices.

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the nuclear safety field, with a minimum of ten years of relevant work experience. This includes at least five years in a senior role and four years of experience at the international level. Candidates should have a proven track record in applying nuclear safety principles and managing complex projects, particularly in an international context. Experience with developing countries is considered an asset, as is the ability to lead and coordinate technical safety reviews and capacity-building missions.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's profile.
