Job Overview: The Assistant Communications Officer plays a crucial role in executing UNHCR's Global Communications Strategy. The role involves developing communications strategies, managing media relations, producing multimedia content, engaging on social media, and coordinating public outreach campaigns. Duties and Responsibilities: The Assistant Communications Officer will be responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with media outlets, including television, radio, and news agencies, to promote UNHCR's aims and activities. They will assist in developing partnerships with government entities, NGOs, and other UN agencies to foster cooperation on interrelated activities. The officer will organize public awareness campaigns, draft bulletins and updates on UNHCR operations, and brief national and international media on developments. They will also plan and organize advertisements, exhibitions, training seminars, and social events to enhance public understanding of UNHCR's work. Additionally, the officer will prepare communication budgets, identify and manage risks, and perform other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of 1 year of relevant professional experience in journalism and/or communications, particularly at the international level. A strong social media presence is essential, along with experience in advocacy campaigns, brand management, and media analysis. Candidates should have experience in reporting, writing, and editing for various media formats, as well as familiarity with digital asset management systems and digital analytics. The ability to manage projects and teams is also desirable, as is experience working with goodwill ambassadors and high-profile influencers.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in fields such as Journalism, International Relations, Political Science, Communications, Public Information, or Media is required. Candidates with a graduate or doctorate degree may be considered with no prior experience. Relevant certifications in communication or media-related fields are also beneficial.
Experience: The position requires at least 1 year of professional experience in journalism and/or communications, with a focus on international contexts. Candidates should demonstrate a proven ability to manage projects and teams effectively, showcasing autonomy in suggesting and executing communication campaigns and activities.
Languages: Knowledge of English is mandatory, along with proficiency in the UN working language of the duty station if it is not English. For national professional jobs, knowledge of the local language is also required. Candidates should aim for at least a B2 level proficiency in the required languages.
